River's Edge Kayak & Canoe Trips' owner Lollie Mercer likes to joke about being in the business of curing nature-deficiency disorder. It's certainly true that sunlight and exercise provide the body with a whole host of benefits, and Lollie's customers get plenty of those riding the rapids of the Russian River. She and her staff outfit guests with one of six types of boats, which include styles that range from the classic canoe to double kayaks. Self-guided groups embark on three- to six-hour trips where they navigate Class I and II rapids. When the water calms, they can view the abundant wildlife along the river's banks, including osprey, eagles, otters, and turtles. Eventually, groups land at River's Edge Beach, where Lollie and her crew collect gear and guests reunite with their less-awesome land-based vehicles.
To Doctors Justin and Kimberly Hoffman, disease is not something that should be treated only with a pill—as naturopathic medical doctors, they posit that all ailments have a strong relationship to one's overall well-being, and that taking a measured, holistic approach can not only alleviate immediate concerns, but also help improve overall health and well being in the long run. Aside from prescribing medications to ailing patients when necessary for conditions such as hormonal imbalance, musculoskeletal injuries, and metabolic imbalances, the doctors also work in tandem with other healthcare providers to help healthy patients maintain their well-being and fortify children against bacteria and HDTV.
Making use of the motivation provided by friends and the beauty supplied by local parks, the duo of instructors behind ecoFit takes troupes of women outdoors for calorie-busting exercise in the sunshine. Wendy Welling, who is an ACT-certified personal trainer, and Stephanie Evans, who studied exercise physiology and nutrition at UC–Davis, lead their workouts multiple times a day, varying routines throughout the week to provide quick results in increasing their clients' general levels of fitness and ability to tell the difference between Monday and Tuesday while blindfolded. As a grateful gesture to the community spaces that make this type of exercise possible, ecoFit gives 2% of its annual revenue to Santa Rosa city parks and California State Parks organizations.
Dr. Michael Ridgeway, a licensed chiropractor and nutritionist, slenderizes bodies using Nouveau-Lipo technology. During 30-minute treatments, low-frequency ultrasonic energy is used to help break down cellulite and fat cells, causing them to release their contents into the body where they can be flushed away by the lymphatic system or burned for energy. Multiple sessions may be needed for an optimal outcome.
The studio at CrossFit Sonoma County pulses with high-intensity workout routines. Led by coaches Sarah Pierce and Dan Schmieding, who both compete in national CrossFit events and hold multiple CrossFit certifications, students undergo varied exercises from the scheduled Workout of the Day. Sarah and Dan circumnavigate the floor, guiding movements, ensuring safety, and gingerly removing any unnoticed "Kick Me" signs pinned to T-shirts. Combining weightlifting, gymnastics, and track-and-field techniques, CrossFit aims to build resilience, strength, and versatility, equipping students with the stamina for athletic and everyday activities. Instructors scale each workout up or down to accommodate individual levels of fitness or exercisers recovering from restrictive injuries. Encompassing more than 3,000 square feet, CrossFit Sonoma County’s gym—nicknamed “the playground”—houses atypical equipment such as pommel horses, suspended rings, tires, sledgehammers, and weight sleds to facilitate each patron’s fitness goals.
