It was more than 12 years ago that Rik Lazenby threw caution to the wind and a lucky rabbit’s foot over his shoulder and struck out on his own to follow his dream of owning his own arts studio. After serving as an art teacher and school administrator for 32 years, Rik decided to transition his artistic background into a career in decorative arts. To sharpen his skills, he traveled from Dallas to Verona, Italy to study at Safra Colors, a premier manufacturer of Italian plasters and also headed to Louisville to study with Martin Alan Hirsch of The Faux Finish School. And at home in Dallas, he honed his skills under the tutelage of Doyle Self of the School of Italian Plasters. Now a professional decorative artist specializing in faux finishes and specialty plasterwork, he works with clients to add unique, aesthetically pleasing color and accents to their homes. Lazenby also shares his skills with students of all skill levels during painting classes.

For more than three decades, the framing specialists at The Framin' Shoppe have preserved memories behind glass. They build custom frames for flat items such as diplomas or photographs and build shadow boxes to contain three-dimensional items such as quilts or football jerseys with the athletes still wearing them. The shop also purveys DIY framing materials; posters; prints commemorating Alabama, Auburn, and other SEC football teams; and a wide selection of mirrors. Conveniently, the company operates at four Birmingham locations.

Slinging strikes and slamming home runs since 1885, the Birmingham Barons ready themselves for another year of fierce Minor League competition. Pitcher Charles Shirek and returning manager Bobby Magallanes look to build momentum from the team's 2011 playoff appearance and begin the 2012 season with numerous wins, few losses, and no trouble from the actual barons of Birmingham. Duos of Barons fans can head to Regions Park for a six-pack of bat-and-ball spectacles. The 10,800-capacity stadium hosts a profusion of special events, such as a fireworks displays, T-shirt giveaways, and panel discussions on traditional baseball-stitching patterns. Groupon customers should call the box office to schedule their welcome announcement at least one week prior to the chosen game.
