Named by USA Today as one of the top 10 roller-skating destinations in the country, United Skates of America in Tampa provides indoor family fun with a spacious rink and various skating games. Jam skating combines dancing and gymnastic moves set to Top 40 hits, and skating limbo blends the formerly disparate joys of rollerblading and chiropractic therapy. When fatigued by the rigors of the rink, children can refuel on pizza and soda at the snack bar. Inside the arcade, they enjoy games of air hockey and Ms. Pac Man, which teaches kids the importance of a nutritious diet high in fruit and ghosts.

The cool blades of skates have cut grooves into the ice at Hommocks Park Ice Rink since 1975. Skaters flock to the indoor rink during public-skate times curving into figure-8s, flying through the air doing axels, and laying down to imitate the most popular hockey mascot, a friendly boulder. Aspiring skaters aged 4 and older brush up on skills during group lessons. Meanwhile, when skaters need time on less slick surfaces, they can refuel with snacks and treats at the Slap Shot Café, which brims with the aromas of pizzas, chicken wings, and nachos.

Even in the dead of winter you might hear the phrase, "meet me at the pool!" McCarren pool has been keeping families cool during Brooklyn summers since way back in 1936, but for the first time in its 77-year history it will welcome visitors year-round. This holiday season, the recently rehabilitated pool deck will become the McCarren Rink, a transformation that has the press abuzz, including The New York Times. The rink will also include gourmet eats provided by Hanson Bros.?which was featured in a recent article on Grub Street? and an on-site skate shop, and is scheduled to remain open through January or longer, depending on public demand and weather predictions from local groundhogs.

As part of the Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment Complex, located at the historic Chelsea Piers, the Golf Club perches over the same port that once welcomed ships into New York City. Now, golfers tee up in the driving range's 52 heated and weather-protected stalls, which overlook the glinting waters of the Hudson River. Automatic tee-up systems position balls for launch across the 200-yard, net-enclosed fairway. A putting green allows patrons to improve their short game, and two Full Swing simulators encourage them to take hacks in virtual environs, transporting them to famous courses across the country or fifth-grade birthday parties where they missed the pi?ata.

Children and adults alike can enlist in Golf Club at Chelsea Piers? classes, which stratify students by experience level. The 12-member coaching staff includes PGA and LPGA professionals, and sessions take place in a 2,000-square-foot teaching facility.

City Ice Pavilion's NHL-sized rooftop rink is open to ice-capaders year-round. That's thanks, in part, to the large weatherproof dome that curves over the the interior and gives it a cavernous feel, much like the ancient ice skating rinks found in pyramids. Aspiring skaters can take lessons, then try out their new skills during public skate sessions or adult or youth hockey leagues. Besides classes and open skating times, the Ice Pavilion also hosts a wide range of skating-themed events, including a regular morning coffee club for experienced adult skaters.

It all started with a deflated basketball. Though longtime friends Mike Kennedy and Eric Martin scoured downtown Boston for an inflating needle to fill it, no shops in the area carried one. They were frustrated—and they realized that other Bostonians looking for athletic gear were likely frustrated too. So in 1983, they opened City Sports, a shop stocked with all the footwear, athletic apparel, and sports equipment that the metropolis had been missing.

Nearly three decades later, Mike and Eric's neighborhood business has expanded to 20 shops across the East Coast. In addition to stocking popular brands such as Vibram, The North Face, and Patagonia, the store engineers its own CS by City Sports line. At City Sports, athletes can gear up for soccer games, stock their tennis closets, get ready to run through another winter, and much more. Shoppers include yogis, cyclists, and tennis players—anyone seeking to outfit active lifestyles, whether they're playing a team sport or braving the hike up the world's largest gumdrop. In addition to footwear and apparel, the staff stocks fitness equipment such as kettlebells, lifting gloves, and dumbbells.
