Acrobat Sorin Salcianu has exercised his high-flying skills in performances with Cirque du Soleil and international competitions. His wife Tammy has spent more than three decades building muscle as a competitive gymnast and fitness trainer. Both are United States Academy of Gymnasts–certified coaches. As the co-owners and directors of the Academy of Gymnastics and Dance, they draw from their combined fitness backgrounds to lead a team of instructors from Romania, Argentina, France, Canada, and the United States. With this international team, the school is able to draw from fitness and dance training styles from around the world. The resulting programs include leveled, kid-focused courses in recreational and junior-level professional gymnastics as well as tumbling, ballet, jazz, and hip-hop dance.
The fancy footwork of Pamela Ann School of Dance’s instructors have launched them onto stage with headliners such as the Wu-Tang Clan, B2K, and the Black Eyed Peas; earned them roles in the riveting, graceful performances of Cirque du Soleil; and landed them amid the innovative rhythmic stylings of Stomp Out Loud. Headed by Pamela Ann Schumacher, who has a degree in dancing and has taught for 20 years, the talented staff coaches students as young as two years or as old as a bearded sea turtle. In addition to classic forms such as ballet and jazz, the studio offers classes in hip-hop and breakdancing. While instructors emphasize proper technique as they provide individualized attention, their main priority is to instill a passion for dancing while making sure students feel valued and have fun, welcoming those who see dance as a recreational pursuit, rather than a daily commitment like loving your mother.
An almost ethereal glow bathes the Self Quest Institute. Hardwood floors glimmer softly in its light, which also reveals an Oriental-style fan on the wall. The studio can't really claim dance or yoga as its main event, since a wide variety of both unfold within its walls. It offers ballet for teens, kids, and adults; for strictly the older crowd, instructors lead lyrical, modern, and jazz as well as Bollywood and burlesque lessons. On the meditative end of the spectrum, students can try yoga classes, PiYo—Pilates and yoga—sessions, and organized meditation.
The certified instructors at DanceCenter want to show their students the positive effects dancing can bring to their lives. At this large, wood-floored studio, students can gain flexibility and burn calories as they learn the moves of salsa, waltz, tango, country-line dancing, and ballet, among a host of other styles. Kids and adults can come in for personalized instruction and energetic group classes or private lessons.
Although "anarchy" is defined as a state of disorder, there's nothing to distract Anarchy Salon's stylist, Lisa, when there's a client in the chair. Instead, she welcomes and gives them her undivided attention; she doesn't even answer phone calls. This allows her to cut, color, and smooth hair just as her clients envision.
