For owners Anita and Wayne Tamme, City Scape Winery represents a dream turned hobby turned full-fledged business. The Tammes only sell their own wine, created in small batches to allow for more customization. In the summer, City Scape offers lighter, sweeter varietals; the winter brings classic, more traditional wines. Oenophiles stopping by the winery can typically sample up to eight of City Scape's wines, or peruse the retail store for its extensive inventory of winemaking supplies, including extracts, flavorings, yeast, and wine kits.
Falderal Winery welcomes guests into the oak-study tasting room twice a month to expound upon the scientific miracle of fermentation. Instructor and vintner Paul Kovacich, a native of the terroir of western North Carolina, wields his experience at Thistle Meadow Winery to aid the public during fermented endeavors. Paul's class covers the winemaking process, from the addition of yeast to bottling to making labels out of cartoons from the New Yorker. Reservations are recommended, as the winery caps classes at eight students.
Though it's named in honor of author Edgar Allen Poe, The Poe House isn't full of talking ravens and men descending into madness. Pictures of Poe, however, do adorn the exposed brick walls behind the rustic establishment's bar. Like the six-packs on its shelves, the bar's taps are filled with microbrews and craft beers, many of which are sourced from local and regional brewers. The Poe House also specializes in high-gravity beers—which, unlike antigravity beers, don't float into space when you open their bottles.
Travels in Beer Tours' chauffeured adventures make pit stops at breweries throughout Western North Carolina, where tourists sip samples of award-winning local beers. However, the tours are about more than drinking—the expert guides also let tour groups a peek behind the scenes and offer insights on the beer-making process and tricks for pairing beer with food. On select tours, participants also hike to picturesque waterfalls or feast on hearty bratwurst lunches.
