What is JBMS? In short, we’re a music school offering lessons for acoustic/electric guitar, bass guitar, piano, keyboard, drums/percussion, violin, music theory, and more. But we’re much more than that: we’re a community of musicians, working for musicians. Our studio has served over 1,000 students in the WNC area.
Ax-prentices can visit the Greenville Guitar Academy—which is under the guidance of owner Stephen Williams and his experienced staff—to wail, shred, riff, and strum their way from atonal ignorance to the heights of music nirvana. Half-hour private lessons are available for any experience level. Secure from acoustic interruption in one of the academy’s practice spaces, novice players and road-hardened rockers alike can perfect their jazz, blues, metal, slide, and other string styles with guidance from seven personable and knowledgeable instructors.
Preschool Plus provides a fun, safe, and stimulating environment for 3, 4, and 5-year-olds to preheat their brains before the emotional and social rigors of life in kindergarten. With 25 years of experience as an early-childhood teacher and director, Kathy Hughes leads a team of certified educators that focus on cultivating the cognitive and developmental needs of each child. Although each instructor is equipped with eyes in the back of her head, a small teacher-to-student ratio ensures each child is nurtured and cared for. Based on the retention theory of the "Song That Never Ends," monthly themes are incorporated into every section of the curriculum. Each classroom also contains interest centers geared toward literacy, science, music, and how to properly eat an overstuffed burrito.
Fine Arts Connection provides artistic entrepreneurs of all ages and skill levels with the means to create. Instructor Yichen Reneau enlivens brushstrokers with more than 15 years of teaching experience and prodigious skill in an array of styles and media. The 90-minute introductory drawing course inserts biology-class notebook doodlers into a different classroom to work on fundamentals such as shadow shading, how to make thumbs not look weird, and recruiting fruit models. Meanwhile, the two-hour Chinese brush painting class lets students ink Chinese characters with special brushes on provided rice paper, upon which they'll delicately depict the characters for truth, beauty, and Marilyn Monroe sunbathing on a duvet made of Campbell's soup cans.
Turning Pointe Music & Dance is like a garden for artistic talents. Their instructors start cultivating dance students when they're just 3 years old, and as they progress, the fledgling dancers move on to more and more advanced techniques. The curriculum includes a four-level pre-professional program with technique classes that cover the finer points required of a well-rounded dancer. Turning Pointe Music & Dance's experts also teach music, and they work with adults during dance and fitness classes, such as Pilates.
Offering classes for adults and kids seven and up, the Academy of Fine Arts is a non-profit organization that encourages an appreciation of music with a heartfelt love of the instrument. Putting drumsticks in empty hands, flutes to pursed lips, and a spring to the voice's step are great ways to foster creativity and self-expression, increase spatial intelligence, and spicy up the dull world of crickets. Classes are available for a slew of instruments including guitar, piano, violin, voice, and many woodwinds and brass. Those distrustful of shredding on an instrument they didn't have a hand in making will be interested in the Build a Guitar lessons.
