The Pittsburgh Games takes the limitations of a quirky, one-off race and blows them to smithereens. Rather than just competing in a run or mustache-grooming contest, folks can compete across a wide range of events, including competitions across nine different stations, indoor triathlons, biathlons, obstacle course runs, and other fitness challenges.

Thanks to an adjustable resistance knob on each bike, the indoor cycling class routines at Psycle can be easily adapted to all fitness levels. However, they are also a challenging workout, and “not for the weak of cochlea.” The husband-and-wife duo helming the studio, Tom and Joni, blast motivational tunes throughout sessions and encourage students to sing along. However, the studio doles out free earplugs to any takers, ensuring comfort for all.

The studio’s name, a fusion of psychology and cycle, reflects the same philosophy as its high-octane tunes—a belief that the mental and physical are as interconnected as a lumberjack and the axe he shaves with. Outside of cycling classes in the stadium-style indoor cycling studio, the instructors also bring this philosophy to fitness classes that incorporate kettlebells, circuit training, and playing catch with mini fridges.

Crooked River Adventures’ river adventures are leisurely, no-experience-required pleasure cruises that challenge the muscles while massaging the mind’s shimmering-blue waterscape dreams. Glide past verdant foliage, through glittering reflections of aged bridges, and into great blue herons’ great blue neighborhoods while the sun warms your skin, the wind blows through your hair, and your hair blows through your hat. All the while, you’ll be learning the proper strokes that propel floatmobiles to ultrafun, and you’ll begin to gain functional understanding of the strength of a body in fluid, powerful motion. Crooked River Adventures operates in conjunction with Kent State University Recreational Services’ Adventure Center, which has received statewide recognition for its boating program and outstanding handshakes from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft.

Doug Crytzer holds the rare distinction of being a professional racer. When a local boy scout troop hired him to organize an adventure race for them, he discovered he loved producing races even more than running them. He founded American Adventure Sports in 1997 to indulge his new passion, while raising awareness of nature's beauty and efforts to preserve it.

Today, AAS, as Doug dubs it, organizes adventure races, triathlons, mountain bike races, and camping trips into American wildernesses across the country. The organization also has a brick and mortar store located in Pennsylvania, where staffers provide athletes with all the gear they need to compete in any of the events or go on an adventure of their own making.
