As he steers the Freeport Water Taxi, Captain Rick Cohen safely transports passengers around local South Shore areas between Freeport and Point Lookout. As passengers hop on his floating taxi, they’re often seen in the company of a bike or pet, both welcome on water-taxi trips. A ride on the water taxi also makes it easy to visit several waterfront landmarks and eateries, including seafood haven Fisherman’s Catch and Crow’s Nest Mini Golf.
Wednesday through Sunday, Captain Cohen tours the bay with passengers on 60- and 90-minute daytime and sunset cruises. As the blazing sun begins to hide behind the horizon, passengers breathe in the salty sea air and draw close to their companions or ask a seagull to hold hands with them. The boat can also be chartered for bird- and harbor-seal-watching tours based on the season, as well as fishing trips.
A colorful creature soars high above Rocky Point's coastline. Its rainbow sail lifts, dips, and turns over sandy beaches and a blue ocean that stretches as far as the eye can see. The gliders in question belong to GMI Paragliding School, which makes its home along Rocky Point, a site insured by the United States Hang Gliding Paragliding Association. The school’s skilled instructor introduces beginners to the basics of paragliding, which include ground control, monitoring the weather, theory, and techniques to avoid attracting amorous vultures. After mastering beginner skills, new flyers can join Long Island Paragliding Club to pursue dreams of someday touching the sky’s ceiling.
Cultural Arts Playhouse has been fostering the development of up-and-coming actors for more than 15 years. At its Musical Theatre and Acting Academy, students from 1st–12th grade hone their on-stage skills by taking classes on singing, acting, and improvisation under the tutelage of an experienced teacher. Kids get to show off these skills in full theatrical productions, with main-stage shows opening up auditions to the entire community so people can see their neighbors' acting chops and dusted-off fake skulls. Cultural Arts Playhouse alumni have found success in New York and throughout the country, appearing in HBO's The Sopranos, and such Broadway productions as Les Miserables and Aladdin.
Ultimate Gym's trainers first kicked open its doors in 1986, and their no-nonsense attitude toward hard work and smart training have endured since then. Trainers challenge students through cardio and muscle-toning drills in boot camps, yoga, and Zumba sessions, and a staff, led by coach Billy Reuter, uploads self-defense maneuvers into feet and fists in their Ultimate Fighting Solutions classes for kids and adults. Layered on a foundation of Krav Maga, which was developed and battlefield tested by the Israeli Defense Forces, the system blends moves from across the martial-arts spectrum to train people to defend against real-world scenarios. After churning out new muscles, guests can visit the onsite chiropractor to manage pain, recover from an injury, and turn their heads back toward the front after a boxing match.
