Rowena Brown wakes with a start, bracing herself for the wave of pain created by severe carpal tunnel and debilitating fibromyalgia that had stolen her sleep for years. But the pain doesn’t come. She shakes her head, amazed, again, at the pain's absence. After years of ineffective treatments, it took only six months of Bikram yoga to free her body from the shackles of her disabling ailments. Once she realized the power of the practice, she determined to create her own studio to help others to heal themselves in the way she did. After an intense nine-week training at Bikram’s Yoga College of India, Rowena graduated a certified Bikram teacher, stronger and healthier than ever before.
Now Hot Yoga Therapy LLC helps students of all fitness levels to develop the same heartiness with classes led by knowledgeable instructors in a spacious studio. A giant, 10-foot ceiling fan—which can speak and often tells celebrities "I'm a huge fan"—sends hot air cascading to the odorless, textured-rubber floor as the students flow through a series of 24 poses and two breathing exercises in 90 minutes. The fresh air recirculates every three minutes, allowing beginners and experts to stretch and sweat side by side while breathing well.
Sunlight pours onto the exposed-brick walls of the Jowers Training Systems private training facility, where exercise rings dangle from the ceiling and colorful weights line the shelves. Throughout the week, the facility is a flurry of motion as students of all ages and fitness levels undergo high-intensity exercise routines as well as personal- and team-training sessions. Personal-training sessions adhere to the specialty program designed by certified personal trainer and fitness aficionado Jeff Jowers, who combines fat-burning exercises with nutritional guidance to banish unwanted pounds more efficiently than traditional workouts or covering yourself in helium balloons. In team-training sessions, Jowers and his staff bring the same level of intensity, adding an element of teamwork that encourages all students to celebrate each other's successes, work harder to achieve goals, and hit new personal records.
In a no-fluff gym filled with steel training bars, plywood walls, and black free weights, personal trainers and exercisers work side by side to forge paths to fitness. Jeremy McKenzie, the gym's training coordinator, emboldens his students to chase down their fitness goals by drafting a personalized blueprint. For group classes, staffers pull from a playbook of CrossFit exercise regimens designed to prepare police officers, military special-operations units, and washed-up prop comedians for hostile environments. Traditional training methods mix with Olympic-style weightlifting and kettlebell lifts to build muscle and burn calories. Trainers and their pet kangaroos step into the ring to teach boxing, sparring, and kickboxing basics.
At CrossFit Insomnia, certified coaches lead athletes and fitness disciples toward their fitness and wellness goals according to CrossFit’s principles of varied, functional strength. In their gym, which is referred to as the “Box,” classes sweat through a different Workout of the Day (WOD) each day. WODs are always different, but often include exercises that range from weightlifting and running to rowing, kettlebell training, and gymnastics-inspired exercises.
Triple Threat's co-owners and directors Holly Grubb Smith and Kim Moser Hobson are professionals. In addition to their degrees in dance education from UNC Greensboro, they learn more about teaching and dancing every year. Kim has been recognized as teacher of the year by West Forsyth High School, and Holly currently puts her skills into action as a Rockette in the annual Radio City Christmas Spectacular. They share their talents in Triple Threat's wide range of classes, which boost self-confidence in children as they explore dance, voice, and dramatic performance. Each part of their curriculum is broken into classes for aged 3–18. Elementary students grasp basics such as memorization and group cooperation, and high-school students attempt advanced skills such as directing or telepathically making audiences cry during dramatic monologues.
