Ken Snook wasn't like the other boys in school. His classmates dreamed of becoming basketball players, astronauts, and rock stars, but Ken wanted to be a butcher. The teenager hadn't known it when he took a part-time job at a small butcher shop in Detroit, but he soon fell in love with the trade, developing a knack with the knife and a keen eye for quality cuts. After working as a butcher for years, Ken purchased Colasanti's Market and set up his own butcher shop amid its shelves of groceries and rows of produce.

Today, Ken continues to slice up fresh cuts of USDA Choice black Angus beef, housemade sausages, and fresh seafood. He can even provide an entire hog for a pig roast, complete with electric rotisserie, charcoal, and grill. Beyond his butcher shop lies an entire market of fine foods and groceries where friendly staff members bustle, directing customers to gluten-free goods and refereeing shopping-cart races down the dairy aisle. A deli staff whips up fresh sandwiches, salads, and party trays, and customers sip on complimentary coffee and peruse selections of imported wine and beer. Above their heads, a cheerful model train loops around tracks suspended from the ceiling. Outside, the sun beams on pots of colorful flowers, and ducks amble around a duck pond. The lively market even hosts special weekend events, from wine tastings to summer parties.

Snap Fitness's around-the-clock gyms enable members to work on their physical well-being with a cornucopia of fitness equipment. With 24-hour access, members don't have to let The Man tell them when to help themselves to Snap's strength and cardio equipment, which features built-in TVs and other media diversions. For those who exercise during conventional hours, Snap's friendly, unintimidating atmosphere welcomes patrons of all ability levels, unlike schoolyard dodge-ball squads. Members also enjoy nationwide access to all Snap Fitness locations, ideal for working out while traveling.

For a dose of custom advice, patrons can seek out a personal-training session with a certified coach, who helps them assess and address their fitness goals. Clients reap the benefit of individual attention as a personal trainer helps them tackle weight loss, prepare for an arm-wrestling competition, or unveil the mysteries of arcane cable-weight machines.

Founded in 1994 as a community-based recreation center, Joe Dumars Fieldhouse is a 100,000-square-foot facility that houses sports leagues and camps in addition to an arcade-equipped entertainment center and an indoor/outdoor restaurant. Dumars' value of sportsmanship lives on through league play and pickup games on one of nine basketball courts and in two full-sized hockey arenas. Camps and clinics provide activity-based instruction to little ones, and the entertainment center's mini-golf and mini-bowling areas host small-scale enjoyment without enforcing miniature-shoe rentals. After rigorous activity, guests can head to Joe's Southern Grill, an arena-themed eatery with tables made from the Pistons' NBA-championship basketball court and a kitchen supervised by head chef Bill Laimbeer.

The stylists, colorists, and aestheticians at Monolo Hair Studio render customized hair and skin services, from Schwarzkopf conditioning treatments to feather hair extensions. Stylists rely on products from Chi and American Crew to nourish tresses, whereas their blow-driers shape and set new 'dos and blast away any tiny plastic Barbie blow-driers that were previously stuck in your hair. The attentive technicians also perform men's hot-towel shaves, chip-resistant Shellac mani-pedis, and 30-minute deep pore-cleansing facials, which are performed as caped clients sit upright in styling chairs like dapper superheroes. At the front of the salon, a glass case showcases sparkling jewelry and shelves of beauty products.
