At Henry's Soul Cafe, the smell of crispy, lightly breaded chicken mingles in the air with the sweet scent of signature sweet-potato pie—just as it's been doing since 1968. Amidst this mouthwatering perfume, chefs concoct down-home southern soul food such as fried fish, smoky ribs, smothered pork chops, and mounds of creamy mac 'n' cheese. Each day, they lovingly bake their specialty sweet-potato pie, which is as wholesome, famous, and orange as Santa Claus after a bad spray tan. When Henry's green T-shirt-clad staff isn't doling out plates of rib-sticking fare, they strive to better their community by supporting charities that help the homeless, the blind, and children in need.

Beyond the striped awning of Fern Street Gourmet lays a deli case, shelves of bottles, and a host of cardboard boxes and wooden crates. The culinary connoisseurs behind the counter want you to know where their goods come from, from fine Spanish wines at budget prices or hard-to-find European candies. Shoppers can browse hundreds of cheeses, meats, beers, and party snacks on their own or turn to staff, who can assemble towering custom gift baskets and point them toward the perfect hostess gift to say "Welcome to your new home" or "Sorry I ate that entire cheese platter last time."

At some point, most children run a lemonade stand; Cary Nalls, however, broke into the business world with a produce stand. In the early 1960s, young Cary and his grandparents had a garden that grew more goodies than they could eat. So Cary convinced them to set up a stand, which quickly expanded to a tent, which eventually turned into a permanent structure. By age 15, when most kids are pouring all their time into being popular or getting taller, Cary had himself a bustling business.

Today, family members runs things at Nalls Produce. Despite its success over the years, the store still identifies itself as a roadside market. Trucks arrive multiple times per week loaded with fresh produce, keeping the shelves stocked with seasonal fruits and vegetables. In the fall, Nalls transforms into a pumpkin patch, where children explore tubes and tunnels made of straw; in the winter, the property becomes a Christmas-tree lot. The store remains just as connected to the community now as it was in the '60s, too; it works with local schools, charities, and organizations on numerous projects.

If you’re looking for a quick stop to pick up some cheese, Cheesetique is not the place. That’s because everything in the store—from the eye-catching cheese wheels to the aromas of uncorked wine—encourages guests to linger, creating an ambiance typical of a Parisian bistro. The shop functions as both a boutique and a café, with staff splitting their time between serving up their award-winning mac 'n' cheese and cutting wedges of cheese to order. The staff has curated a menu of 300 American and European cheeses, each of which are available for sampling. But the best way to sample the vast selection is with a cheese-tasting board, which, when paired with a complementary wine and smattering of charcuterie, creates a mouth explosion larger than that of demolition dentistry. Though their wine and beer list is as imposing as their cheese variety, the staff has segmented the list into easily identifiable categories such as malty bocks, bold reds, and sparkling rosés.

Choices abound at Cafe Luna, where chefs curate an extensive menu of Italian-inspired and American meals. Burgers and paninis provide handheld satiation, and rustic thin-crust pizzas await customization with herbs, nine varieties of meat, and optional decals. Diners ponder their selections atop plush bench seats arranged along pumpkin-hued walls. Mixologists, meanwhile, stir and shake mojitos, margaritas, and martinis behind the bar, which also houses eight rotating draft beers.

Eastern Market Tango introduces locals to the art of tango with group dance parties and lessons conducted by a pair of in-house instructors. Jake Spatz combines his love for dance and DJ'ing in his nightly activities at Eastern Market, and Maximilliano Gluzman brings the skills he learned studying tango with renowned Argentine dancers and teaching at La Academia in Buenos Aires. Their tango lessons focus on correct posture, leading, and following to help couples communicate through body language and respectfully traverse the dance floor. They also work on improvisation, to help couples find enjoyable ways to dance together in crowded clubs or ATM vestibules where space may be limited.

During milongas—dynamic tango dance parties—advanced and beginning students strut their sultry skills on the dance floor until the wee hours. Three-tiered plates of fresh fruit and dark chocolate beckon resting dancers, as pairs work their way across the studio’s spacious hardwood floors.
