Staffed by a team of professionals that deliver everything from haute new hairstyles to eyelash extensions, Yvonne's Day Spa has received particular attention from sources such as MSNBC's Today Show for its unique Fish-y-cure pedicures, which rely on tropical fish to exfoliate feet. Toothless Garra rufa, or doctor fish, hail from the freshwater world's top medical schools, but have been invited stateside for the gentle way they nibble dead skin from between the toes, as guests relax into a leather massage chair and dangle their feet in the creature's warm, watery habitat. After watching the treatment soar to popularity, and dedicating countless hours to learning to breed and care for his tiny aestheticians, co-owner John Ho franchised the idea and made it the signature of all Yvonne's locations. CBS rated the spa's manicures and pedicures as among the best in the DC area in 2011, as they extend beyond the aquarium to include OPI products and high-tech UV gel–curing methods. Stylists offer guests soda and coffee before offering scalps nourishing sips from bottles of hair care products including Goldwell, Nexxus, Matrix, and Paul Mitchell. Hot stones and glass cups gain healing powers in the hands of Yvonne's massage therapists, and ingredients including sea salt, honey, and cappuccino lotion infuse many treatments to leave skin glowing with health and ready for a snack.
Salon deZen's skilled nail technician Tomiko pampers finger- and toe-caps with diligent filing and OPI polish in a classic manicure and pedicure service. Over the course of about an hour, files shape nail tips into graceful ovals or squares, then neatening sticks push land-grabbing cuticles back to their own domains. Feet relax with a soothing soak and scrub after parched digits soak in hydrating lotion. Finally, clients select a favored hue from the spectrum of OPI nail polishesand then watch Tomiko paint it on with Mondrian-esque exactitude.
No style challenge is too difficult for the artists at Salon Ambience. Using products by Redken, Matrix, and Paul Mitchell, they create classic waves, multidimensional layers, and custom colors in clients' hair. Elsewhere on the floor, nail techs perform relaxing mani-pedis, while aestheticians administer facials and swift waxing treatments. The salon also offers private bodywork sessions, helping clients to loosen up after hunching at work or running marathons where they forgot to take off their backpack.
As guests approach the check-in counter at Top Coat Nails & Beauty Lounge, they’re greeted by a receptionist standing beneath two beaded chandeliers. Then it’s on to selecting 1 of more than 300 available shades of nail polish. During application, clients snuggle into two-toned massage chairs as a technician pampers and paints their nails. In addition to mani-pedis, the intimate spot offers spa services such as permanent-makeup application, eyelash extensions, and massages.
Be forewarned: Simply Bliss Salon is not your average frou-frou, super-chic upper Northwest haircut and style salon. Located on the lower floor of a massive apartment building, some who enter might be put off by the initial aesthetics of the place, which nearly-bare walls and simple floors. But just as beauty is more than skin deep, don’t let first impressions fool you; customers who stay for a service tend to walk out the door feeling quite lovely. Cuts and color are specialties here, offered at discounted prices when compared to many of the high-end spaces that exist around the city. Stylists work primarily with organic coloring products that maintain the natural moisture and protein balance of the hair, and Brazilian keratin treatments are also available, as are waxing services.
