Scott Angelo can tell you the exact sip of coffee that changed his life. He didn’t think he would become a coffee roaster until he had a cup of Sumatra coffee from Indonesia and became obsessed with recreating its richness and complexity on his own. Working first with a popcorn popper and graduating to a grill that he converted into a roaster, Scott started roasting green beans in small batches, teaching himself how to achieve those complicated flavors. Now, Scott and his wife Amy run Oceana Coffee, serving up the caffeinated fruit of their labor right inside the café. They roast each batch to order, including medium Ethiopian batches with notes of blueberry, light roasts from Costa Rica, and rich sultry batches from the dark side of the moon.
Tequesta Coffee Lounge’s coffee is about as fresh as it gets—not only are its beans roasted just before they’re dropped off at the cafe, but a single serving is ground for each drink that’s ordered. Filtered water keeps the flavor of the coffee pure as it’s transformed into anything from an americano to an organic ginger-honey latte. Each soup and salad is housemade, and sandwiches such as a BLT with peppered bacon come loaded with local farm-to-table produce. Interesting ingredients sophisticate much of the coffeehouse’s menu: roasted-apple jam sweetens the ham-and-brie panini, and Cointreau and chantilly cream glaze the crêpes Suzette.
Though everything’s available for takeout, patrons are welcome to hang out in the handsome wood-floored dining room or out on the sunny veranda. There’s a small play area where kids can caper about and use the free WiFi to check their stock portfolio. Loyalty cards make every seventh beverage free, and a Tequesta travel mug grants 10% off every beverage that’s poured into it.
All Spiced Up augments patrons' culinary efforts with a taste-bud-tickling assortment of gourmet spices and other cuisine enhancers purveyed and explained by a knowledgeable staff of seasoned spice peddlers. Shoppers can peruse shelves lined with jellies, jams, and sauces ($5.95–$14.99), including Fat Toad Farm caramel sauce, or snatch up tins filled with Republic of Tea artisan leaves ($11–$15) for their brewing or soothsaying needs. Home chefs battling bland recipes can spruce them up with spices and rubs from Rub with Love and All Spiced Up's house brand, or measure out custom-size pinchings and purchase their seasonings by the ounce. On-site libations available include espresso, cappuccinos, macchiatos, and hot teas ($1.50–$3.50), while chef sightings occur all month long at scheduled events, evening cooking classes, and hairnet fittings.
Oceana Coffee’s artisan roasters spare no effort in creating their batches of high-quality coffees. Only carefully selected beans make it through their grading trials, with each judged by its quality, health, and ability to beat a jumping bean in a fight. Coffee orders are roasted per request—customers never receive a leftover bag, or beans that have been sitting in a vat—to ensure each brew has bold flavor and tantalizing aromas. This same attention to quality goes into every pot of coffee brewed at Roasting House & Café, as well as the drinks simmered up at Palm Beach Gardens Cafe at the Borland Center.
At Cool Beans Indoor Playground & Cafe, children frolic in a more than 6,000-square-foot indoor playground among attractions such as a dress-up area, inflatable slides, and an in-floor trampoline. Weekly development classes in arts or music also spur children's mental development. The play center also caters to adults: in a WiFi-connected cafe area, baristas pour coffee and lattes and serve up casual fare, such as fruit-and-chicken salads and Italian-style paninis.
Blend Bistro combines the fresh beverages of a juice bar with the light eats of a sandwich shop. Not everything the cooks prepare resides between two pieces of bread, however; they also prepare wraps and salads. And of course, the fresh juices they make could practically count as meals themselves.
