Penn & Paper's studious scholars send experienced eyes across the pages of resumés and admissions essays for undergraduate, graduate, and medical-school programs. The team of former admissions staff, college professors, and the ghost of Herman Melville's seventh-grade teacher transforms resumés and essays into acceptance-worthy snapshots of prospective employees and students by emphasizing the strongest aspects of the piece and making subtle changes to improve content and flow. Well-polished work is then delivered swiftly on the wings of the Internet. Although Penn and Paper's staff edits papers, they will not write essays or participate in pizza-eating contests on behalf of clients.
City Harvest strives to end hunger in New York City’s communities through food rescue and distribution, education, and food drives. It delivers approximately 100,000 pounds of fresh, quality nutrition to people in need daily, sourcing the food from restaurants, grocers, and farms. Approximately 600 community food programs benefit from City Harvest's deliveries, which are made via a fleet of bikes and trucks.
Before Roberta Fineberg was an award-winning photographer, author, and teaching artist, she was a newbie, giddy with excitement when the Saturday Review published one of her photographs. Before long, her work appeared in French magazines and on book jackets for publishers such as Harcourt and Simon & Schuster. Her love of pets lead to the writing of her first book, City Riders, a story in words and pictures about three teenage girls in New York City and their shared love of horses, published by Macmillan.
When she isn't snapping dramatic portraits or offering her skills to businesses in need of creative advertising, she chronicles events and cultural milestones in her signature candid, emotional style. Roberta also shares her experience and skill with others during NYC Spark your Creativity workshops, designed to get students off the beaten path, looking at the city in a new light to boost their creativity. Today, Roberta's photography can be found in France at the Bibliothèque Nationale and the Bibliothèque Marguerite Durand, as well as in the United States and Russia. When she isn't snapping dramatic portraits or offering her skills to businesses in need of creative advertising, she chronicles events and cultural milestones in her signature candid, emotional style.
Roberta also shares her experience and skill with others by teaching workshops and classes. She can often be seen roaming the streets of New York, hopping from island to island as she encourages her pupils to see photography as an adventure in experimentation. As part of her educational outreach, Roberta helps struggling middle-school students and adults who speak English as a second language to improve their linguistic repertoire through photographic excursions and friendly conversations.
A former IT manager for JPMorgan Chase, Arthur Zilberman opened New Jersey Laptop Repair with the goal of offering customer-oriented computer service from a convenient midtown location. Joined by a team of expert techs, he repairs and tunes up computers and laptops to meet the rapid pace of the city’s hard-working professionals. Free estimates precede all services and repairs, with the flexible staffers accepting computers through the mail, picking up and delivering them from clients, or doing repairs on site. Their combination of excellent customer service and competent work has created a tidal wave of enthusiastic local press and happy laptops that open and close themselves in applause.
As a child, Julio Vilar always wanted to photograph his family's gatherings; at every birthday party and family reunion, he'd be the one trying to hold the camera instead of posing in front of it. These days, Vilar snaps shots all over New York City, capturing the dynamic angles and giant sea monsters that fill the city skyline as well as the subtle details of subway stations and neighborhood storefronts. Families, though, still remain his favorite subject. He specializes in family portraiture and infant photography, giving parents tangible memories of their children growing up.
Puppetry Arts organizes creative-arts programming that combines the art of puppetry with cultural exploration. Puppetry Arts reaches out to a variety of audiences with its community and educational programs, youth-empowerment activities, and professional theater program. In recent years, it has fueled new musical productions including Anthropomorphic, which examines the imposition of social standards on youth, and expanded its creative scope by incorporating video and animatronic puppets into its repertoire. Puppetry Arts goes into schools to help improve literacy and oral-language skills through puppetry and mask activities, as well as a youth-empowerment program that teaches young people how to express themselves artistically. The organization also provides professional theater, which aims to help emerging artists reach out to new audiences with thoughtful material.
