Around the shores of Jordan Lake, a squad of outdoor enthusiasts works to cultivate environmental stewardship in youngsters through discovery-based classes and events that disguise education in a cloak of fun. Codirectors Eleanor Herr and Denise Nelson both possess a passion for nature, degrees in early-childhood education, and the creativity to combine the two into exciting programs.
Lessons and field trips designed for public- or home-schooled children instill a love of nature while adhering to the Common Core State and North Carolina Essential Standards for education. Events for kids and their families, such as a full-moon night hike with a campfire, encourage bonding that can strengthen telepathic communication during future potato-sack races. Weekly nature camps for ages 6–11 keep young brains blossoming in the summer. Jordan Lake Environment Education also hosts birthdays, replete with themed activities, coloring books, and free time for any self-provided cake and refreshments.
The Center for Volunteer Caregiving helps Wake County seniors and adults with disabilities maintain their independence and quality of life by providing services such as transportation and home visits. Through its Caregiver Support Program, the center also provides a temporary respite for full-time caregivers who are supporting a loved one with dementia or other disabling conditions. Caregivers can take much-needed time for themselves as trained volunteers offer quality companionship to the family member in need.
Cary Yoga and Kickboxing challenges both body and mind. During high-intensity kickboxing sessions, groups of students jab, hook, and roundhouse kick their way to a healthier existence. A combination of martial arts, boxing, and other fighting forms, kickboxing classes aim to build strength and increase self-awareness, as well. Meanwhile, the facility divides its yoga offerings into two different programs: power Vinyasa and sweat and detox. The latter program revolves around poses that improve the body’s circulatory and lymphatic systems, helping to expel toxins.
Passion for fitness pulsates through the veins and limbs of each experienced Fitness4life instructor, ready to be transferred to aspiring athletes of all ages. With the belief that fitness is a lifestyle, the center lets clients drop into an unlimited amount of its various group-fitness classes, which are offered from morning until night, Monday through Saturday. Learn a flurry of moves and improve your balance, coordination, and blood flow in the cardio kickboxing course, or give a steel-toed jolt to your weekend exercise routine with the Saturday-morning boot camp (equipment not provided). The supportive, friendly nature of the group courses and the relaxed atmosphere of the facility buoy bodily motivation.
Ruckus Pizza and Bar's chefs have been satiating the immense hunger of NCSU's budding student body and esteemed faculty since 1999. They crown their fresh, made-to-order pizzas with garlic, roasted red peppers, and ricotta, and will even swap out traditional pizza sauce for ranch and spicy buffalo sauce. As their savory pies bubble in ovens, the kitchen team prepares a number of handheld foods, including gourmet philly cheesesteaks, meaty sub sandwiches, calzones, and spinach-stuffed harmonicas. Bartenders shake up fruity cocktails or pour beers and wine that complement the flavors of their hearty cuisine. On select nights, the staff welcomes guests to cheer and shout during trivia, participate in open-mic nights, and dance to the thumping beats of live DJs. They also unify their newly remodeled eatery's sports-themed decor with athletic flourishes such as jerseys, commemorative ballpark photos, and neon signs.
