MYOGASPACE owner Mitra Somerville has spent three decades teaching yoga and meditation, sharing his wisdom at universities, hospitals, and retreats, both in his homeland of Australia, and around the United States. MYOGASPACE represents a home base from which Somerville can teach authentic yoga.
The boutique studio is based in Somerville's home, a fact that he believes enables students to get more in touch with their inner selves and establish a strong sense of community. Inside, Mitra leads students through various levels of Hatha Yoga, including senior and gentle yoga. Often, they’ll branch off into other yoga-related disciplines, such as meditation, breathing practice, and chanting, important skills to master for situations in daily life.
Sun Yoga Hawaii represents the culmination of a long journey for its founder, Michele Lowchinovscy Santos. After coming to the island for college, Michele began work as a psychologist for children with special needs. Her first student was a young girl named Grace who had Rett syndrome, which inhibits speech and deliberate movement. Michele first learned about hot yoga from Grace’s mother, who used it to cope with the physical and emotional challenges sometimes associated with Grace’s care. A gift from Grace’s mother, Michele’s first hot-yoga class sparked an interest that resulted in her entrance into a Bikram training program and eventually led her to create Sun Yoga Hawaii, which she dedicates to Grace.
Michele seeks to share peace and personal growth within her studio, where infrared rooms warm up to between 95 and 105 degrees. Eco-friendly bamboo flooring cushions soles and nature sounds fill the air during sessions, which begin as instructors and students perform sun salutations that pay tribute to Mother Nature, inventor of the yoga mat.
At over 100 locations throughout the country, CorePower Yoga (CPY) invites students to creative classes that meld movement, breath, heat, and music into entrancing routines to energize the body and mind. Signature CPY classes are taught by approachable certified yoga instructors who lead students through dynamic, Vinyasa-style flows with demonstration and verbal cues, helping pupils of all experience levels tone core muscles and cultivate balance. CPY also offers teacher training and lifestyle programs to empower students to become yoga instructors or to just advance their individual practice. During construction of all its new studios, CPY strives to use recycled content, install eco-friendly and efficient mechanical systems, and ensure that any waste created doesn't end up in landfills or just piled in Mr. Henderson's garage.
One With 8's experienced instructors strengthen the body and calm the mind through hot yoga and fitness classes. Room temperatures reach balmy tropical levels, helping muscles to relax, blood to circulate easily, and brains to imagine themselves in a beachfront paradise where all the coconuts are full of chocolate milk. During a Power 8 lesson, students explore Ashtanga and its emphasis on flexibility and self-discipline. The All In One class takes them into the realm of Hatha yoga, where the combination of static stretching and heat burns off fat, stress, and toxins. Pilates mat bodywork is the basis for the Infinite Core, a workout that runs through 34 poses. More introspective and meditative, Relax DEEP sessions offer slower movements with longer holds.
The certified instructors at Bikram Yoga Honolulu specialize in Bikram yoga, a style that uses 26 poses to work every major muscle group in the body. Each 90-minute class is taught in 105-degree heat, believed to help practitioners ease chronic pain, sweat out toxins, and stretch further than they would otherwise. Though most sessions are actively led by a teacher, some are conducted in meditative silence, and others are held by candlelight. The studio offers classes in other yoga styles as well, including Ashtanga, which uses breath control to bring about a heightened state of relaxation.
Dorian Wright, a student of meditation since he was six, and Lehau Kai, an asana practitioner with more than 10 years experience, were both trained by renowned yogi and founder of the Power-yoga style, Bryan Kest. After mastering this style, which provides a rigorous total-body workout capable of sculpting lean muscle while improving circulation and mobility, the duo opened their 1,700-square-foot studio with a team of certified instructors. In addition to leading Power-yoga classes, the diverse team infuses the schedule with a range of yoga varieties, such as Vinyasa flow, slower paced Yin yoga, and Aerial yoga performed on suspended fabric that's designed to facilitate deep stretches. On Thursdays, Power Yoga invites a DJ to come spin motivating beats during classes, inspiring upward dogs to get down and downward-facing dogs to "get down."
