The son of a Californian flamenco dancer, Greg “The Salsaman” Henry was captivated by dancing early on. At the age of 3, he joined in on performances with his mother’s dance troupe. Years later he went on to found the Hot Salsa Dance Company, which puts on interactive latin-dance shows throughout Hawaii and California. Henry and other company members also lead the company’s instructional arm, Hot Salsa Hawaii, teaching group classes to beginning and intermediate dancers.
In these classes, you can learn the basic steps of Dominican Republic–style merengue, a more energetic version than its Haitian counterpart. You can also work toward mastering the sideways footwork of the bachata. Classes are limited in size to ensure that each student gets plenty of attention from the instructor.
Surf Honolulu gives clients the lessons and equipment to conquer the white-capped waves off Oahu's shores. Lifeguard- and CPR-certified instructors impart tide-riding techniques during surfing lessons conducted at four beaches selected because their waves are seldom clogged by other surfers or porpoises riding kickboards. Each lesson includes 30 minutes of safety instruction led by both English- and Japanese-speaking surf instructors. For a more leisurely jaunt over the waters, guests can take advantage of standup-paddleboard rentals or guided tours through Kailua Beach or Kahana Bay. Surf Honolulu also offers a wide selection of surf equipment and apparel for those on the market for a new board or looking for a swimsuit upgrade.
Rylan Lizares learned Brazilian jujitsu at the hands of Professor Pedro Sauer, and it's Sauer's instruction method that Lizares now shares through his studio, Gracie Technics Jiu-Jitsu Academy. Lizares focuses on providing students with the exact same education in grappling that he had, teaching everything from the basics of combat to the most advanced submission holds. Professional UFC fighter Max Halloway supplements this education with kickboxing classes, teaching students effective combinations of strikes known to make punching bags grow eyes for the express purpose of crying.

Along Waikiki's beaches, surfers ride waves, curling over the horizon and gently splashing into the water just before reaching the sand. Kai Sallas—no stranger to tall waves—takes his beginner-level students nearly a mile south of Waikiki to a friendly, isolated shore that's ideal for learning to long board without a crowd.
An acclaimed professional surfer, Kai belongs to a breed of world-class athletes whose competitive talents are accompanied by teaching acumen. The long-board champion relished teaching family and friends how to surf as early as age 12. Before teaching professionally, though, Kai amassed a long list of awards from around the globe, including the coveted Professional Longboard Association championship twice and playing Peter Pan twice in a dolphin-only performance. In 2009, he came ashore to his home in Waikiki and opened Kai Sallas' Pro Surf School Hawaii. The venture made him a second-generation surfing teacher, since his father also taught surfing for 35 years. Housed in the Waikiki Beach Marriott, the business has evolved to not only include surfing lessons but also tours.
