When Verge Athletics opened, there was nothing quite like it in the area. In the years since, it's both introduced CrossFit to the larger community and built up a strong, committed community of its own. Its leaders are full-time, career coaches devoted to helping members with their personal goals?as athletes and as individuals?over the long run.
On any given day, Verge coaches lead classes through high intensity workouts that focus on mastering functional gymnastic, cardio, and weightlifting movements. Using these movements and an assortment of equipment, regular bouts of high-intensity exercise tone complete physiques.
At CrossFit-267, a crew of certified coaches help clients manage the journey to a fitter, healthier lifestyle. The gym's primary activity is, of course, CrossFit, an exercise discipline that involves well-rounded fitness, continual progress, and hard work. Because each movement involved in a given Workout of the Day can be adjusted for the individual?from the number of push-ups to the weight on the squat rack?CrossFit works for every single exerciser regardless of their fitness level.
Certified boxing coach Alden Washington was born into a family of boxers. His father, in between teaching boxing classes in the US Army and Navy, began coaching him in the pugilistic arts at the age of 10. Alden took to the sport, winning boxing titles in Silver and Golden Gloves competitions, all while earning his black belt in bando, Chinese kenpo, and tae kwon do. In 1980, the consummate athlete began coaching students, conducting classes in kickboxing as well as sprinting and sports conditioning.
At Washington Boxing Academy, Alden combines his extensive title-taking and teaching experience to conduct kickboxing classes for all ages. Amid the professional heavy bags and cushioned floors of his studio, the certified coach infuses kickboxing routines with rounds of creative exercises, including jumping rope, shadowboxing while holding weights, and slamming massive tires with hammers. In personal sessions, he spurs on advanced boxers as they spar in the studio's full-size boxing ring. He also provides students with fundamental self-defense tips, such as how to a catch an oncoming fist mid-punch or halt a flung pie midair.
At CrossFit Village Berwyn, getting fit and staying healthy are community endeavors. Though individuals receive personal attention?and training?from coaches in each class, they also work out with a group of like-minded folks. CrossFit Village Berwyn's instructors believe that community-oriented fitness inspires each participant to stay committed, push harder, and take on new fitness challenges.
CrossFit classes use functional, everyday movements to strengthen and condition bodies, including squatting, jumping, running, and pushing. There are no typical gym machines; instead, participants use body weight, jump ropes, and boxes to challenge muscles and build endurance.
Founded in the late '60s, Lucille Roberts' studios were some of the very first gyms that focused exclusively on women's health. Now with locations spread across New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, Lucille Roberts have kept up with the times with such classes as Zumba, Flirty Girl fitness, hip-hop aerobics, and Piloxing, a combination of Pilates and boxing. The gyms also sell weight-loss products such as green coffee bean capsules, raspberry ketones supplements, and anti-gravity rays.
Intoxx Fitness's trainers push groups of students to their limits in search of better fitness and stronger bodies during classes such as kickboxing, spinning, and Zumba. Though the gyms' schedules vary by location, each hosts classes for all skill levels seven days a week, both in the morning and evening. The gym floor includes a large free-weight and machine lifting area for ample opportunity to supplement in-class workouts with more targeted exercises, for which personal trainers can assist with tips, tricks, and advice on chatting up that single weight machine.
