Just like the savory, oval-shaped loaves of bread that inspired its name, El Bolillo Bakery is a culinary staple amongst Houston's Hispanic community. Though it started as a modest corner bakery, El Bolillo is now nothing short of a legend. Its reputation can be traced back to the droves of people who flocked to the original Greater Heights location once word of its fresh pastries, churros, and tres leches cakes got out. Growing demand led the crew to open up a second and third location just to keep up with the crowds. Today, the bakery continues to craft fresh bolillos, tortillas, and empanadas every day. Though these would be highlights at almost any other restaurant, here they take a backseat to El Bolillo’s famous custom cakes. Available in a variety of flavors, these cakes can be made to resemble anything from a favorite cartoon character to a designer purse that looks and tastes just like the real thing.
Airline Drive in the Heights plays host to plenty of Mexican restaurants that serve seafood, but precious few that offer a Mexican-Chinese hybrid. In fact, there’s only one: Golden Seafood House. Pull into the gated parking lot amid towering palm trees and grab a spot at a Formica table, then prepare yourself for heaping plates of fried jumbo shrimp and a goblet of ceviche with a side of Chinese-style fried rice. There are micheladas for the warm weather days, and hearty fried foods when the weather turns cool. Golden Seafood is short on décor but big on atmosphere, with fun-loving diners and amiable staff dishing out updated classic like whole fried catfish, but served with a side of egg rolls.
Tortas El Angel’s cooks spill a cascade of lovingly spiced meats into french bread receptacles to forge the menu's 13 titular tortas. The sandwiches burst with flavorful skirmishes between explosive jalapeños and tangy chipotle dressing, mediated by the cubana torta's ham, pork, and sausage ($5.99¬–$8.99) or the beef and egg of the nortena torta ($5.99¬–$8.99). The selection of tacos ($1.65 each), whose diminutive size makes them ideal for bribing hungry librarians, showcases corn or tortilla discs buckling under the weight of chicken, beef, or pastor. Bend straws around a dulcet array of aquas frescas ($1.75¬–$2.25): from tamarindo as delicately sweet as the tears of Kool-Aid Man to the cinnamon-fueled party of horchata. Diners digitally supplement the authentic fare that fills El Angel's welcoming digs on the restaurant's free WiFi.
