Throngs of excited runners crouch along the starting line, all dressed in pristine white T-shirts. As the Color in Motion 5K begins, the sea of bodies sets off along the course, where handfuls of purple-, blue-, and yellow-colored powder start flying in from the sidelines. The safe concoction of cornstarch and dye sprinkles onto faces, shirts, shorts, and skin, dressing runners in a technicolor haze. Teams or individuals make their way through the 5K course, and finish the race wearing a pallet of washable and biodegradable paint. Each race partners and benefits local charities, with racers running individually, in teams, or sponsored by their favorite Crayola color.
Clean running clothes have no place at Mighty Mud Dash, a 5K-challenge course that beckons runners of all fitness levels to plunge through stretches of mud in search of glory. Friendly competition is encouraged as waves of runners forge a path through more than 20 rugged, slippery obstacles?including wall climbs, cargo net-covered crawls, 30-yard mud-filled trenches, and a sprawling tarp slide.
Though the main race is only open to competitors age 14 and older, a scaled-down 100-yard obstacle dash welcomes children as young as 6 to test their agility and endurance. After the competition, participants gather for celebration and music at the post-race party, where they can rinse off or roll all over an expensive white velour sofa to a soundtrack of upbeat tunes. A portion of the proceeds from the event benefit the work of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, a non-profit organization working to conserve Texas's natural resources like its hunting and fishing grounds.
The formula for a perfect girl's night out is reinvented at the Pretty Muddy 5K. The staples are there: girlfriends ready to have fun,
Fans of Mario Kart know Rainbow Road as a glow-in-the-dark racecourse in outer space. So do fans of ABC's The Bachelor, only theirs is located on earth and strewn with more celebrities than turtle shells. To them, it's the series of inflatable arches that flashed hypnotically around Juan Pablo and Kat as they hurtled through the Electric Run. Seth Rogen, Carmen Electra, and a pink-wigged Vanessa Hudgens have also been spotted among the global event's hordes of runners and walkers.
Rainbow Road is just one of many "lands" that make up Electric Run's luminescent 5K. Any given Electric Run course contains five to seven of these brightly lit zones, each decorated according to its theme with neon trees, hanging umbrellas, phosphorescent cacti, and cascading fountains. Each land also matches the surroundings with its own soundtrack: upbeat and energizing for the wilder areas, calming and melodic for the surreal ones. Once the sun sets, participants travel through them all at their preferred pace. Everyone arrives at the same final destination, however?a DJ-propelled after party that keeps the night illuminated until the thunderous ka-chunk of the sun's timecard.
Part color-powder fight and part animal-themed 5K, the Jungle Fever 5K Colorful Run For Your Life Series brings runners of all ages together for a morning of relaxed and fun racing. Volunteer "animals" surprise runners with splashes of color as they leisurely make their way through an untimed 5K race. Outlandish outfits are encouraged—either wild animal-themed outfits or all-white clothing. The whole affair ends in a colorful splash as runners lob handfuls of colored powder at one another in a color fight.
