The scene is a familiar one: hotel guests lounge beside the outdoor pool as staff members filter around, offering refreshments or collecting clients for a spa treatment. However, at Pet Paradise, the pool is bone shaped and all the guests are dogs. This luxurious scene is one cat and dog owners can find at this boarding and daycare facility that has been owner Fred Goldsmith's pride and joy for a decade. The animal lover was inspired to start his own pet hotel when he simply couldn’t find a place he was comfortable leaving his bichon frise when he went on vacation.
Fred made Pet Paradise to his exact specifications, and the pet hotel's amenities reflect the loving care he lavishes on his own beloved pup. Dogs and cats can luxuriate in spa-quality grooming treatments or burn off some energy during group playtime. In the evening, pets can settle into plush bedding and feel safe knowing that the dedicated live-in staff resides just a bark away. Nocturnal kitties spend the night exploring their own private six-level cat condos while gentle spa music fills the air to keep them entertained. In case of any emergencies, Pet Paradise keeps veterinarians on-call, and in the event of a snack emergency, each staff member is a certified bacon cook.

Hotel guests don't often get free hugs and head-pats from the staff during their stay. That service is unique to Meadowlake Pet Resort. Helmed by a team of experienced animal enthusiasts, the pet hotel cares for dogs and cats with private, climate-controlled suites and a panoply of animal-friendly activities. Canines and felines alike get to spend the night in rooms and condos outfitted with amenities such as high windows for natural light, flat-screen TVs and outdoor patios, and soothing music as each pet dreams about finally chasing down that mail carrier.
The resort's specially trained staff escort dogs outside, where they can play on four acres of green space, walk down nature paths, and dip in an outdoor diving pool. Cats, meanwhile, are set free to frolic or lounge in a screened-in porch with tiered climbing platforms and a selection of fine toys. These staff members also perform healthcare services such as daily five-point wellness checks, and they monitor daily feedings using NutriSource Super Premium food. To keep suites clean, staff scour each room with hospital-grade cleaning systems. To keep pets clean, they lather coats with specialty shampoos at an on-site pet spa.
Named "Best Aquarium Supply - 2010" by Houston Press, Fish Gallery provides a plethora of sea-bound critters as well as the accouterments to create an aboveground abode for them. Its stalwart staff guides pesca-philes in the selection and care of freshwater and saltwater creatures. On the freshwater side, bettas enjoy the solitary life ($3.99 each), and neon tetras turn tanks into techno-dance parties ($3.49 each, $30 for 10). The percula clown fish somersaults in saltwater ($29), swimming circles around the illustrious coral beauty fish ($25). Fish-friends create water-filled wigwams, making their new swimmers feel right at home with plant decorations that can also be used as disguises during underwater chase scenes ($7.99+).
Wabash Antiques and Feed Store has been providing Houstonians with everything from animal feed and heirloom tomato plants to puppies for over a hundred years. Before owner Betty Lou Heacker moved the shop to its current location on Washington Avenue in the Washington Corridor, it had been an antiques shop and a traditional feed store under previous owners for the better part of a century. Now, it’s known as the place to go for organic gardening supplies, the biggest tomato plant selection in Houston and adorable chicks and ducklings at certain times of the year. Pick up plants, feed, bee supplies, bird supplies, fountain supplies and nearly anything else a garden might need – or just stroll the aisle and imagine the possibilities.
