Better Way Gourmet was born out of the frustration that can result from trying to cook at home while balancing a busy schedule. As a company, its singular goal is to streamline the process of nutritious and gourmet eating for its clients, taking care of the planning of meals so they don't have to. To that end, Better Way's meal plans may be accessed online with weekly menu plans, shopping lists, and brand recommendations. The site accommodates those with dietary restrictions with healthy homestyle and gluten-free meal plans.

Better Way also strives to foster a gourmet cooking community. The site hosts forums, regular articles, and members-only handshakes to keep people in the loop with recipes and other happenings within the online gourmet-cooking network.

Q&A with Joan Ifland, Phd, Chief Executive Officer

Describe a time your services really changed a client's life for the better.

Our services take the stress out of finding healthy, affordable food for busy professionals and for home-makers. Clients tell us they save two hours per day shopping for, preparing, and cleaning up after meals. Our clients tell us they overcome their struggle with excess weight, fatigue, and brain fog. They say that their doctors take them off of medications related to diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol. It's a joy to hear these reports.

Besides making clients happy, what do you like most about your job?

I like hearing that clients love the gourmet food. I love hearing that clients move away from a variety of illnesses from vague aches and pains to severe diabetes. I really enjoy educating. I'm a doctor of nutrition in the field of why people choose processed foods. I like helping people understand why they choose 'bad' foods so they don't feel so guilty.

Sometimes it's all about the little things in life. What supplemental courtesies do you include with your main services to leave clients with a smile on their face?

Our chef, Jessica Lynn, works closely with clients to make sure we're sending them food they really enjoy. 'Picky' eaters are thrilled to find easy, fun, varied meals that they love. People with food allergies get the security of knowing they won't get foods that their allergic to.

People who think they can't afford delivered meals are so happy to find that our pricing is comparable to fast food and much less than restaurant food.

As a businesswoman who has worked for Goldman Sachs and helped run multiple companies, Dana Shamas found it necessary to put time aside to just breathe. For 14 years, her yoga practice has mitigated the stresses of her career, enough so that she established her own wellness venue as an oasis for other harried Houstonites. Bayou Bliss Yoga radiates peace even before you walk in the door; the Houston Press notes the charm and intimacy of its "adorable bungalow-style house," where students of all stripes can learn to exhale stress and browse an earth-friendly boutique. On clients' first visit, Dana's staff of wellness experts greets them with an in-depth discussion of their lifestyle habits. These consultations yield a unique, long-term plan for reduced anxiety and a greater sense of balance.

Each plan can contain a mix of the center's specialties, from yoga classes to massage therapy and nutritional counseling. The yoga curriculum encompasses both gentle and advanced lessons and limits the number of students to six, promoting a personalized approach to disciplines such as Hatha, Vinyasa, and Jivamukti. Other healing methods focus on breath work, energy healing, and meditation. In fact, patrons are welcome to meditate in the studio whenever classes are not in session or a witch's potion has rendered them invisible.
