Mark Chenoweth's first picture was done the old-fashioned way: he loaded film into a 35-millimeter camera, snapped the picture, and developed it himself. That was two decades ago, and he's been working as a professional photographer ever since, preserving cherished moments at weddings and conducting senior-portrait shoots.
The technological advantages of today's cameras make them much more user-friendly than the one responsible for Mark's maiden photograph, but many casual photographers don't use their equipment to its fullest potential. Mark founded Fotoskool to help less experienced photographers better understand the trade with a trio of classes designed for beginners and intermediates learning to wield a DSLR or point-and-shoot camera. The Fotoskool Basics class edifies beginners about the fundamental precepts of DSLR operation, such as how to hold the camera and adjust shutter speed. More experienced pupils can enlist in the Fotoskool Next Level class, which focuses on working cameras in manual mode, or the Fotoskool Edit class, during which they will learn to lighten or darken pictures, change file formats, and remove the silver splotches left by poltergeists in the background.
Miami Valley Shooting Grounds has been a destination for firearms training since 1953. Onsite ranges and classrooms also make ideal training grounds, where instructors lead sessions that accommodate all skill levels.
The Wright State Raiders aim to overcome a bumpy season start to propel a run of backboard-slapping matches into success at February's Horizon League tournament. The challenge inspires energetic head coach and well-known public speaker Billy Donlon—now in his second year at the helm after four years as assistant coach—to further psych up his roster with canny strategy and an all-team Henry V discussion group. As cheers ricochet around the arena, junior guard Julius Mays pops off screens for soft jump shots and jukes defenders for ardent drives to the bucket. Meanwhile, sophomore forward AJ Pacher patrols the paint with nearly 7 feet of rebound readiness. From corner seats in the Wright State University Nutter Center, fans command a panoramic view of the court and the freshly baked new video board that gleams amid a sea of raucous students and other faithful basket boosters.
With more than 50 years of combined experience snapping and framing shots, the artists at Schwabe Studio Photography usher fleeting moments into the future during in-studio and on-location sessions. They specialize in photographing families, newlyweds, and soon-to-be-graduates, who can choose from seven unique senior portrait sessions. Sports-themed shoots showcase young athletes in action, and birthday parties inside the studio capture youngsters dressed in whimsical costumes. Once each session's shutters have snapped shut, the photo artists easily print out the digital images, which, unlike film images, need not be developed inside a stolen cocoon.
