Konstadino "Gus" Tsilionis started his first tavern in his native Greece. When he founded his second restaurant, this time in the United States, he picked a similarly coastal location: the Tampa Bay Area. Now owned and managed by son Tom Tsilionis, The Blue Dolphin Restaurant features an indoor pond outfitted with a footbridge and a leaping dolphin. Although not quite on the same scale of the Aegean Sea or the Gulf of Mexico, it's perfect for throwing coins into while wishing they would bounce back out as larger coins.
The coastal theme extends to the kitchen's offerings, too. The culinary team whips up plenty of fresh seafood, from crab-stuffed tilapia fillets to Maine lobster saut?ed in cognac. Classic Italian and American dishes, like chicken pesto fettuccine, dijon-mustard-rubbed prime rib, and tender barbecue ribs, round out the menu, as does a soup and salad bar stocked with over 30 types of fixings. To wash it all down, diners can sip premium cocktails like the house long island iced tea?which, thanks to a splash of Blue Cura?ao, is ocean-blue.
When Peter Santangelo became president and owner of his parents' nursery business at age 17, he carried on his parents' horticultural expertise and the Santangelo entrepreneurial spirit to make his business a success. He traveled all over Florida to cull his botanical inventory, and over the years he expanded the nursery and even started doing his own farming.
A winner of the 2011 and 2012 Best of Suncoast silver award, Canterbury Farms employs botany buffs who tend to 43 acres of Florida-friendly woodland plants that include palms, shrubs, and tropical herbage. The lush, green landscape is punctuated by colorful exotic plants as well as by Amigo, a cartoonish fiberglass statue that once perched on the roof of Peter’s parents' nursery decades ago. Pensive green thumbs may solicit shrub-related style from Canterbury Farms experts by bringing in photos of their outdoor or indoor spaces, and free estimates are also available for landscaping projects.
At The Plant Stop, rows of lush foliage and vibrant blooms flourish amid sunlight and open air, surrounding visitors in hundreds of draught-resistant shrubs, flowers, and trees. Pat, a plant expert with more than 25 years experience in the landscaping business, runs this horticultural haven. Along with a staff of expert nurserymen, Pat helps customers select exotic plant life and nurture classic foliage such as flowering trees. He works with growers across Florida to stock the store's lush pathways with more than 20 varieties of clay-ball-rooted palm trees, which can thrive for many years without being staked or finishing elementary school.
At The Plant Stop's design station, landscapers chat with patrons one-on-one to draw up complementary landscape designs that incorporate plants tolerant of Florida's climate. The customer-focused staff also delivers trees free of charge.
When youngsters from a nearby school for disabled children visited his old Halloween store in Indianapolis, Don Surenkamp happily walked and wheeled them through the aisles and explained the holiday's traditions. After he relocated to Florida, Don remember those children and created a handicap-accessible haunted house whose proceeds support The Angelus, a group home for cerebral palsy, reports the Tampa Bay Times. What began with a dozen spooky rooms now lures intrepid guests with 25 rooms occupied by skeletons and demons. Spines continue tingling on a haunted hayride down a 1-mile haunted trail and through the outdoor pirated-themed haunt, which includes a spooky 40-foot pirate ship. Don lets the fainter hearted pass through until 8 p.m. with glow sticks in hand to keep away scary monsters, pirates, and photocopies of failed spelling quizzes.
