The staff at Studio Fusion invites kids and adults of all skill levels to dance and get in shape in a sprawling 6,000-square-foot space with four studios, two of which have Marley sprung floors to soften dancers' landings. The team of dance instructors includes choreographers and backup dancers to the stars, as well as two former members of the Laker Girls.
The experienced crew helps pre-cheerleaders build strength and flexibility during tumbling classes, and teaches beginning and advanced ballet and hip-hop moves to kids and teens. The multidisciplinary fitness program offers just as much variety, including the ballet-based movements of Barre Fusion, Bikini Boot Camp toning sessions, and kickboxing- and tai-chi-based Turbo Kick classes.
The space has been designed with a cozy student lounge with WiFi and a gourmet coffee bar, allowing youngsters to work on homework or their investment portfolios and parents to chat. In addition to annual dance recitals, the studio hosts dance and musical-theater camps. The Broadway Kids program hones the skills children need to be a triple threat—dancing, singing, and juggling three smartphones at once.
Yoga Shakti Wellness Center's director, Diana Pipaloff, has unwavering confidence in her instructors' abilities. It's appropriate, because most of them learned their practice at the center. Their 500-hour training program, which includes post-graduate mentorships and internships, equips graduates with Yoga Alliance registration. Once trained, a select few of these yogis begin work at Yoga Shakti Wellness Center's locations in Irvine and Huntington Beach.
At each location, students stretch and breathe during more than 10 types of yoga classes. Shakti yoga, the center's flagship style, leads participants in combining sun salutations, poses, and energy work to move toward increasing their physical and spiritual strength. Other options from the more than 100 classes offered each week include prenatal yoga and gentle yoga, which elucidates yoga's foundational poses and philosophy.
However, the staff isn't super-glued to their yoga mats. They also teach ayurveda, a lifestyle that combines dietary changes with massage, meditation, and other purification therapies.
Fitness expert Christina Lucy founded Code Pink Boot Camp and has since expanded her fitness program into numerous locations throughout the western United States. Each of the trainers working for Code Pink claims extensive training and accredited certifications in the industry, and must undergo a strict audition to demonstrate their fitness prowess and knowledge of how many annual budgets each U.S. president could bench-press. With a schedule that includes several sessions throughout the weekday, the classes accommodate clients with varying schedules. During each session, instructors guide participants through high-intensity exercises that aim to incinerate fat, tone torsos, and improve overall well-being. The program caters to women of all ages and fitness levels and stresses safety, fun, and perseverance.
The personal trainers at Evolve Gym spend less time roaming a huge gym facility and more time helping members achieve their fitness goals. That's because Evolve isn't a sprawling treadmill bank, but instead a private personal-training gym where trainers work one-on-one with members. Though modern exercise machines and free weights fill each room, the trainers, not the equipment, direct every workout session while following each member's custom workout plan. To help members reach their health and physical goals, staff nutrition counselors concoct personalized meal plans, fitness instructors lead group yoga and cardio classes, and airbrush-tan artists bestow bods with beach glows that mimic the results of hours spent laying on a beach or several minutes spent bear-hugging the sun.
ClimbX's indoor, ever-changing rock walls mimic the dusty color of actual outdoor crags. In this environment, climbers of all ages and abilities strap on safety equipment and climbing gear and learn to master the hand and toe grips that cover the arena's artificial rock formations. The outgoing and experienced staff teaches introductory-level climbing courses that impart basic safety procedures, proper belay technique, and climbing commands. A kids' climbing club coaches climbers aged 17 and younger through the basics of tying top-rope knots and securing handholds tightly even when those handholds start to quietly chuckle. When not helping people turn into spider-people, the staff also hosts birthday parties and corporate teambuilding events.
Accommodating students of all skill levels, each class at Bikram Yoga Huntington Beach is built around a series of two breathing exercises and 26 postures. Trained in an intensive course at the Bikram Yoga College of India, certified instructors lead pupils through the requisite poses during each 90-minute session. Classes unfold atop anti-microbial and anti-slip Flotex flooring inside a studio kept precisely at 105 degrees and 40% humidity. Complimentary towel services await students after every session, as do refreshing showers and the health drinks, clothing, or mats available for purchase at the studio's retail shop.
