No one understands what problem skin can do to a person's self confidence better than aesthetician Michelle Kelly. The owner of La Piele Spa & Aesthetics Center was a longtime acne sufferer herself, and tried countless treatments and products to try to heal her skin. The experience, while frustrating, ultimately led her to her true calling in life. Determined to help others find solutions for their skin woes, she enlisted in aesthetics school and went on to earn certifications in laser treatments and chemical peels.
Today at La Piele, she takes a whole health approach to skincare, evaluating everything from a client's diet to their lifestyle habits in order to help treat dermal concerns such as acne and clogged pores. Besides basic facials and microdermabrasion treatments, she might recommend retinol peels, which use vitamin A to help rebuild skin from the inside out, or LED phototherapy, which uses intense pulses of light to diminish signs of aging such as fine lines, age spots, and loss of firmness. In addition to advanced skincare treatments, La Piele also offers beauty-boosting services such as spray tanning and special occasion makeup for events such as weddings, proms, and glamorous nights in.
More than 30 years after its inception, Cactus Salon & Spa and its team of continually educated stylists have not lost their edge?they earned the Long Island Press's designation as Best Hair Salon and Best Day Spa in 2011 and 2012. It's not surprising, then, that the salon has enjoyed such impressive growth over the years, with more than two dozen separate spa and salon locations.
Although hair is still the focus?stylists craft 'dos that reflect everyday ease or fashion-forward thinking?the repertoire has expanded to include everything from nail treatments and massages to permanent cosmetics and laser services. Since the roster is so broad, many clients take advantage of Cactus Club memberships, which give them the flexibility to try multiple services and products by deactivating the force fields between treatment rooms and granting a 33% discount on Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
The stylists at brand-new Anthony Richard Hair Salon master the latest texturizing, coloring, and cutting techniques to furnish a menu of glamorizing hair treatments. Stylists show off their chops by crafting face-framing cuts that complement their clients' hair types and lifestyles, smoothing strands with a formaldehyde-free keratin treatment, and adding length to strands with extensions or Rip Van Winkle vacations. To add the finishing touch to a hairdo reboot, the salon also offers custom airbrush makeup that gives skin flawless coverage and natural color.
Behind a sunny picture window, visitors at The Natural Beauty In You recline in Adirondack chairs, digging their toes in the sand and gazing at a relaxing scene of blue ocean merging into pale-blue sky. This mini indoor beach reflects the easy-going, relaxed atmosphere at the fitness center and mini beauty zone. Throughout the week, experienced instructors teach fitness classes such as Zumba, Pilates, and yoga. Staffers also work to enhance natural beauty holistically, such as organic spray tanning and foot detoxification baths.
The stylists at Gizay Michaels Salon, a Redken concept salon, create both innovative and classic coifs that can easily transition from casual to glamorous. Every service begins with a consultation to discuss clients’ target look or hair-related challenges, which may include controlling frizz or escaping the staticky clutches of marauding balloons. Along with services, the salon also hosts a full line of styling serums from Redken, which may be purchased to help clients to maintain their salon look at home.

Certain hairstyles look good on certain facial shapes. When a client asks for a haircut you know will be a mismatch for them, how do you handle it?
I would show them pictures of other people with the same facial shape and try to explain why that haircut won't work for them.
Fashionable hairstyles are constantly changing. How do you keep up-to-date on popular trends?
Training shows and ongoing education .
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
I have been in the business for 22 years doing makeovers for the Ricki Lake show and makeovers for Woman's Day magazines.
