  • Gymboree Chicago
In 1976, busy California mother Joan Barnes wanted nothing more than to find a play place where she and her kids could enjoy age-appropriate, educational activities. Finding none, she developed her own innovative play environment within a developmental-based program structure now known as Gymboree Play & Music. Today, kids tumble and learn in more than 650 locations in 33 countries around the world, engaging in open play and classes designed to build cognitive and motor skills. As parents participate in their children's development, their kids learn to paint, play music, and interact socially outside of their preschool knitting circles.

  • Hemmens Cultural Center
Whose Line Is It Anyway? stars Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood tickle ribs in an evening of improvised comedy. Starting with suggestions form the audience, Mochrie and Sherwood fashion witty sketches that free guffaws from bellies and remind sad clowns what they've given up for their craft. Interactivity spices up the evening, with the comedic pair calling audience members to the stage to assist in chuckle-making scenes. The Hemmens Cultural Center ensconces guests in main-floor seats guaranteed to be within 100 feet of the stage, affording straight sightlines to onstage action and comfortable distance from the occasional gargoyle infestations of the balcony.

  • Running Scared 5K for Special Olympics Illinois
Halloween's tricks and treats meet heartwarming altruism as the McHenry Police Officers Association unveils the first annual Running Scared 5K for Special Olympics Illinois. The fun run—which also doubles as a fun walk, stroll, or lollygag if the participants choose—sends costumed friends and families on a trek from scenic Shamrock Farms Park through the subdivision of Legends Lake. Along the paved trail, racers can admire, giggle, and gasp at the array of swaying Halloween apparel before crossing the finish line. All proceeds go directly to Special Olympics Illinois, which enables athletes with disabilities to train and compete in sports events.

Golf with friends is the best kind of bonding. There's nothing like being out in the open air, hearing the wind blow through the beautiful old trees lining the fairways, and refusing to grant your compadres a mulligan. The satisfaction of a well-played hole is amplified by the amusement you get from your partner's three-shot spectacle in the woodsy rough. Today's Groupon gets you and a friend 18 holes with cart at River Oaks Golf Course for $40 (up to a $88 value, depending on the day you go). Your Groupon is good for any time Monday through Friday and after noon on weekends.

  • Sears Centre Arena
BADASS Dash?s organizers live in a world of imagination. Where others see cargo nets, they see giant webs to be scaled. School buses become climbing walls and bales of hay turn into tunnels filled with grass and mud. In city after city, they place 35+ of these obstacles along a 7-kilometer course, and invite individuals and teams to enter the Elite division to test their performance against the best athletes present or even bring their dog along to help. Afterward, the organizers throw a celebratory bash filled with bonfires, food, and prizes for top finishers.

  • RLO Consulting, Inc.
Sponsored by Jerseys Pizza & Grill, Jerseys Music Festival focuses on one of the few things that pleases a crowd like a pizza—live music. While live sets from local bands fill the air with festive beats, the crowd listens while noshing on food and beer specials tastier than the traditional music festival meal of a guitar full of Jell-O.
