  • Raging Buffalo
Raging Buffalo's adrenaline junkies have turned their athletic addiction into a successful enterprise by offering snowboarding and wakeboarding lessons to beginners and experienced riders. In the summer, their instructors take to the wake for lessons that start at the wakeboard school?open since 2001?before taking students on 15-minute riding sessions. When winter comes, the instructors dry-dock their boards in local bear caves and show students how to navigate the drifts with snowboard lessons at their ski park, which opened in 1992. Additionally, Raging Buffalo plays host to a variety of events, from rail jams to USASA competitions.

  • Norge Ski Club
The yawning flatlands of the greater Chicagoland area might seem like a strange place to find the United States's oldest continuously open ski club, but that's exactly where Norge Ski Club makes its home. Opened in 1905 by a crowd of powder-loving Norwegians, the club helps skiers catch some sweet air thanks to an artificial hill that towers above the treetops. Today, it hosts a jumping tournament every winter, turning the event into a spectator sport with brats, popcorn, and alcoholic beverages.

  • Villa Olivia Ski Area
A destination for skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing. A venue for weddings or simply a Sunday brunch. Villa Olivia wears many hats across its lodge's vaulted ceilings, and the attractions change depending on the season. While warmer months are spent playing golf on the par 73 course, winter's snow primes the rolling landscape for a tubing hill and seven snowboarding and skiing runs. Instructors teach both private and semiprivate lessons to help visitors navigate these slopes for hours on end, save for a few trips to the ski cafe for refreshments and to warm up with a cup of hot chocolate poured into their ski boots.
