In keeping with the industrial-chic aesthetic, the interior at David Troy Salon is composed of an intriguing mixture of hard-and-soft decor. Studio lighting and exposed pipes line the high ceilings and look down on plush-yet-modern black salon chairs, abstractly shaped mirrors, and a bright-red accent wall. In these funky environs, expert stylists call upon Paul Mitchell products and the expertise of mentor David Troy to create upscale and enticing new looks.
CoCo Salon and Day Spa's team of stylists, medical aestheticians, and massage therapists may not share the same areas of expertise, but they do have one thing in common. They all know how to listen to their clients, taking notes on their stylistic preferences or skin conditions before cutting and coloring hair on the scalp or temporarily or permanently removing it from other parts of the body. Just as massage therapists customize their techniques to ease anxieties or break up adhesions, aestheticians devise body treatments that wrap clients in their choice of exfoliating salt, Baltic Sea mud, or anti-aging creams. Chandeliers spread a warm glow throughout the spa’s private treatment rooms, each of which includes a shower and a corps of fairy attendants.
Within a three-story house that’s been converted into a salon, Russ and Company Salon’s team of beauty professionals have been haircutting and hairstyling for more than 30 years. Along with hair services, the staff offer makeup applications and facial-waxing services. The salon’s licensed massage therapist specializes in sports massage and the treatment of pain, but can also perform relaxation massage and on-location massage at the home, in the office, or at the county fair while waiting in line to buy a funnel cake.
An elegant woman reaches toward the moon for a kiss in a wood-framed painting above stylist Terry Curry as she shapes tresses inside her private space on the second floor of a sunlit house guarded by leafy oaks. When Terry was a young girl, her father, a proper and traditional engineer, gave her a curling iron, brush, and comb with a mirror because he believed that everyone should be well groomed. Yet he saw hair styling as only a hobby, like starting a jail for stamps, so Terry set out to prove him wrong, and eventually turned it into her full-time career. After building a loyal client base in San Antonio, Terry relocated to Austin as an independent stylist, though many of her clients still make the trek to her studio for cuts and colors that showcase training from Goldwell and Alfaparf Milano.
Before each service, Terry consults with her clients to make sure they share the same vision, showing measurements of length, swatches of color, photos of possible styles, and pictures of the farm where clipped locks will be sent. Terry's passion for beauty shines through in finished coiffures, and she says, "If I were to be born again, I would choose to be a hairdresser again."
Serena Cartwright, a licensed cosmetologist of 24 years, began her career with a passion for styling hair. Since graduating from cosmetology school in Austin, her repertoire has grown to include a host of beauty treatments. Most recently, Cartwright earned certifications in permanent-makeup and eyelash-extension application, leaving out-of-work mascara tubes desperate to drum up interest in mustache-tinting. Cartwright applies her skills as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society’s Look Good Feel Better program, performing beauty treatments for cancer patients regardless of their ability to pay.
As a child, Kathleen Townsend watched in admiration as her grandmother skillfully styled her clients' hair and applied artful swoops of color on their eyelids and cheeks. Townsend remembers, "She was a beautiful and sweet woman and I aspired to be like her." So Townsend did just that—she followed her grandmother's footsteps into the world of haircare.
Today, Townsend backs each service with more than 25 years of salon experience, including training in cutting and coloring techniques from such brands as Redken, Matrix, Chi, and Goldwell. Specializing in color and color correction, her ongoing approach is to make her clients feel "comfortable in their own hair." She carefully listens to each individual to determine a look that fits best with their lifestyles, personalities, and height of their evil stepmothers' tower windows. Townsend participates in ongoing training to keep her skills sharp and her shelves stocked with up-to-date products, including ammonia-free Redken Chromatics four-dimensional color and Mizani relaxers.
Occupying one of three private rooms in a Merle Norman store, Townsend gives each client personalized attention, along with sips of coffee or hot tea. In addition to hairstyling, she provides professional makeup services for weddings, proms, and disguising embarrassing tattoos before family reunions; she uses the Merle Norman line of cosmetics.
