  • WineStyles San Diego
At Wine A Bit Coronado, meals and drinks go down in sips and nibbles. The owners wanted an environment in which people could feel free to unwind while trying new wines and interesting pairings at their own pace. To that end, they collected a wine list from around the world, along with a robust selection of house wines made especially for them. They hold casual tastings in a comfy back room every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening, pouring samples of up to seven wines for guests to try. These events tend to coincide with the presence of a musician, who offers up tunes to please the ears as visitors train their palates and sample appetizers such as artisan flatbreads and brie-and-apple stacks drizzled with agave nectar. Also onsite are more than 20 craft beers made by local brewers.

  • San Pasqual Winery
San Paqual Winery proprietors Linda and Mike McWilliams make wine? but they don't grow any grapes. They prefer to leave the rigors of raising grapes to their local vineyards, who they purchase them from. As an urban winery, they craft their vintages on the micro-level, making small batches and infusing them with an Old-World character and unique flavors such as habanero passion fruit.

  • Carruth Cellars
At the helm of his urban winery in the heart of the Cedros Design District, winemaker Adam Carruth handcrafts award-winning wines, including the 2009 San Francisco Chronicle Best in Class Alexander Valley Cabernet, from grapes he fastidiously collects from all over California. His team handles the production of each varietal from crush to finish, aging juices in barrels that line the walls of the industrial-chic tasting room. The final products?which range from a crisp sauvignon blanc to a bordeaux-style Surfing Madonna?slosh into customized stemware for patrons? enjoyment seven days a week. Also in the tasting room, guests can break into crunchy baguettes from Bread & Cie or nibble on cheese.

  • Highland Hills Winery
Nature plays a central role in the lives of the McClellans. As avid gardeners, they relish plunging their hands into the dirt and planting new seeds, especially those for Rhone grape vines. Yet even as the owners of Highland Hills Winery, tending the vineyard isn't their only means of communing with nature. Local coyotes and birds of prey from the on-site lake help to keep rodents away from the vines and occasionally feed on the grapes, giving the signal that everything is ready for harvest. As a gesture of thanks, the coyote and the surrounding Ramona Grasslands are featured on the labels that adorn Highland Hills' six wines. These barrel-aged styles range from a rich, fruit-forward petit syrah to a bright and citrus-tinged blended white. Every Saturday and Sunday, they're available for sampling in a climate-controlled, ADA-approved tasting room that's furnished with iron cafe tables and cushioned chairs.

  • Lenora Winery
Tucked away in the sunny and picturesque Ramona Valley, Lenora Winery bottles beautiful wines in an equally beautiful setting. Amongst a wide range of varietals crafted from the eight types of grapes that flourish along the vineyard's sun-drenched hills, Lenora boasts a number of award-winners, including their 2012 Lenora Estate Sauvignon Blanc. Visitors can enjoy samples of the wines at the 22-seat tasting room, or drink in the views on the outdoor grape arbor with seating for 44 people. During tastings, guests sample white, rose, red and dessert wines as well as blends procured from several vintages. Winemakers lovingly hand-craft each elixir, with many bottled into fewer than 25 cases.
