Capoeira, an African-Brazilian art form, combines dance, martial arts, music, and acrobatics. All of these elements come together in a circle known as a roda, where capoeira's participants perform improvised movements. Omulu Capoeira Los Angeles, a nonprofit organization, welcomes all types of students into its roda, regardless of age or fitness level. By teaching capoeira, instructors help their students lose weight and build strength, in addition to learning to play musical instruments and sing traditional songs in Portuguese.

Director and owner Michelle Bolong, a former Cirque du Soleil performer and tae kwon do champion, leads a band of professional aerialist instructors who help students gracefully tone bodies while gaining inner strength and discipline. Classes combine elements such as martial arts, pilates, and acrobatic conditioning using static trapeze and cirque-style fabrics for adults and children ages five and up. The 2,800-square-foot training facility features a state-of-the-art professional sprung floor, also known as a floating floor or Mr. Bouncy Ground, to provide a high level of shock absorption.
During his childhood in West Africa, Amen Iseghohi learned life lessons from two main sources: his grandmother and the tires in his backyard. His grandmother taught him that the spiritual and physical are intertwined, and his workouts with tires supported her theory. By persevering when their weight exhausted him, he learned the importance of soldiering on even when a task seemed impossible, a lesson that has stayed with him through his workouts and beyond.

But before they can share their tactics and Mortal Kombat cheat codes, the instructors themselves must be trained. Each instructor who cinches the black belt around their waist has graduated with honors from the Studio’s own rigorous training academy.
