Judged by any metric, Critical Paintball & Archery is something of a celebrity. The chromatic battle arena has been featured in magazines like Facefull, and Splat, and has even made a guest appearance on CSI: New York. Star roles aside, Critical Paintball & Archery is primarily a shop that gives paintball and archery enthusiasts everything they need to hit the battlefield or target practice lanes ? all with the comfort of air conditioning and certified instructors. The catalog's inventory is comprehensive, accommodating casual players and hardcore hobbyists alike with a meticulously curated selection of brands, gear, and apparel. Folks can order online, but Critical Paintball & Archery also maintains a showroom for shoppers who'd rather test the heft and balance of a paintball gun in their hand, or see if a helmet will accommodate the horn of their pet rescue unicorn. Though primarily a store, Critical Paintball & Archery occasionally acts as a school, with seminars and private lessons imparting the techniques of archery. Archery lessons are taught using recurve bows, a beginner-level bow which provides enough power and accuracy to train participants for the 77th Annual Hunger Games.

In the 1998 remake of Godzilla, a mutant lizard famously destroyed Manhattan—and at Hollywood Sports, visitors can do the same. The 23-acre sports center's paintball fields are each designed to mimic sets from classic movies, ranging from Godzilla to Saving Private Ryan; as they battle with their rented markers, paintball players live out their own twist on those film's battle scenes. Matches occur day and night thanks to the fields' stadium-style lights, which also ensure no one finds themselves in a shootout with a really aggressive bat. In addition to paintball, the park hosts other sports—rock-climbing walls, beach volleyball courts, and BMX racing tracks complement the movie-themed battlefields.

The mid 2000s saw the rise of airsoft, an action sport in which players compete against each other using replica guns and plastic BBs. It became increasingly popular as players discovered the joys of role playing as characters from movies, video games, and real life. After noticing a dearth of airsoft fields, retired professional paintball player Sonny Pepito decided to open his own indoor facility, Tac City Airsoft, in 2008. Relying on his experience as a player, field operator, and business owner, he created a successful business and managed to open another location. Both of Tac City's fields now welcome about 50,000 visitors each year for public games, private events, and professional tactical training. Pepito also hopes to develop a realistic, theme-based environment where players can actually become part of the story, much like a 78-year-old who enrolls in high school to learn how to portray a teen on TV.

When Sunny Williamson’s son couldn’t find a satisfactory airsoft facility, his father decided to create one for him. Opened in 2006, Tac City Airsoft has since expanded to two indoor airsoft facilities totaling more than 60,000-square feet. Under the watchful eye of refs, players duke it out in the Fullerton field’s fully enclosed quarters filled with wooden walls and labyrinthine hallways or the semi-outdoor space in El Monte littered with barrels and haystacks. Personnel update the fields every few months to keep repeat guests on their toes as they compete in scenarios such as capture the flag and follow-up games of set the flag free. In lieu of combatting with Tac City Airsoft’s fully automatic M4 rentals, visitors can purchase their own weapons and gear at the pro-shop.
