Ann Kamhi Toran credits Pilates practice with saving her dancing career. After a major back injury threatened her ability to continue performing, Ann devoted herself to Pilates, and the exercises helped rehabilitate her body so effectively that she was eventually promoted to soloist after recovering. Although she stopped professionally dancing more than 20 years ago, Ann still practices Pilates daily.
Ann’s husband, Dr. Errol Toran, also is a believer in the rejuvenating capabilities of Pilates, and he suggested it to his chiropractic patients, incorporating the exercises into their physical rehabilitation. Together, Ann and Dr. Toran decided to create a studio that shared these benefits with the general public, introducing the time-honored exercise techniques that improve posture and build lean, toned muscles.
The studio boasts four locations throughout the New York area, each featuring an arsenal of traditional Pilates equipment. The signature apparatus, the Reformer, generates gentle resistance with a system of springs, pulleys, and miniature black holes. Students push and pull against this resistance while performing sequences of relatively simple movements that require unwavering mental focus to maintain the ideal technique and alignment. By emphasizing controlled, quality movements over flailing your body against a boulder, Pilates exercises can evenly tone muscles across the entire body, with a particular emphasis on the core muscle groups.
Ann and Dr. Toran encourage their instructors to take initiative when leading classes and tailor the pacing or sequence to accommodate students, but each studio does host sessions for particular skill levels. Introductory and Level 1 classes work to develop form and technique, whereas the more advanced sessions begin to include modified exercises or long-division flashcards to ensure a more challenging workout.
Sometimes more is actually more. This is certainly true at The Club of Riverdale, where a 110,000 square feet complex houses an eclectic array of amenities, from six indoor tennis courts to a 25-meter Olympic pool to a spa that is home to six styles of massage. Out of all the sports available at the multi-sport facility, the coaching team specializes in tennis and golf. Racket-wielders can perfect their serves and back-hands in private lessons, beginners’ clinics, and group drills. Meanwhile, golfers train during camps, jaunts in the golf simulator, and with K-vest three-dimensional analysis, which helps clients optimize their swings and stop bribing their ball before each game. An array of workout classes rounds out the gym’s offerings, covering modalities such as Pilates, yoga, and tai-chi.
Bikram Yoga Bronx and Yorktown offers students 38 weekly classes. While you move through 26 poses in 90 minutes, the temperature holds steady at 104 degrees to keep muscles limber and slow-cook any nearby pork roasts. Once class is over, you can hit the studio's showers before heading back outside, detoxified and revitalized.
Astral Fitness and Wellness Center carves and conditions traditional athletes and martial artists amid a sprawling, 13,000-square-foot facility. A fleet of ellipticals, stair climbers, rowers, and cycles torch calories, making room for fresh brawn bulked by Nautilus, Hammer, and Icarian resistance-trainers and free weights. Group fitness classes jolt traditional workout routines with a coalescence of positivity and camaraderie rivaled only by a cheerleading squad that moonlights as a firefighting battalion. Classes include classic tae kwon do, aerobics, and kickboxing, as well as Silver Sneakers, which choreographs gentle routines designed to help older athletes pique their strength, flexibility, and balance without overexertion. After a solo or group workout, exercisers can wick sweat with included towel service, release steam inside the sauna, or open a Matchbox-car parking lot in one of the gym's free parking spaces.
