Since the company's founding in 1927, Cohen's Fashion Optical has grown from a pushcart business into a successful franchise peddling prescription and designer wares at more than 100 locations spanning seven states and Puerto Rico. Each store employs experienced doctors of optometry who test pupils with comprehensive eye exams to assess ocular health, pinpoint visual acuity, and ensure that no wool has been pulled over the eyes. Back in the 1860s, a Swedish professor and eye expert named Herman Snellen devised a ratio to determine and express visual acuity—all using a simple eye chart. Today, the Snellen Chart, dotted with random letters of various sizes, hangs in optometry offices across the world, allowing docs to determine how well a patient sees compared to the “standard”—one who can see two chart objects from 20 feet away, or as we would know it, someone with 20/20 vision.
Like Herman and the doctors after him, Bronx Eye Care uses the Snellen Chart—along with a few more modern devices—to help prescribe the appropriate lens strength for patients of all ages. Once deemed far-sighted, near-sighted, or too cool to not own sunglasses, customers can peruse the clinic’s collection of frames by Gucci, Fender, and Prada.
