As a summer developmental team for college ballplayers, the Webster Yankees bring a slice of the national pastime to local communities and help prospective pros hone their hardball artistry. Budding sluggers and future fireballers take on their New York Collegiate Baseball League rivals in the verdant confines of Basket Road Stadium from June 3 through July 25, vying for the eye of major-league scouts and learning to wield wooden bats rather than the aluminum polo mallets used in the college game. Fans may catch glimpses of tomorrow’s big-league bruisers, as Yankees alumni include recent draft picks of the Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles, and Cincinnati Reds. In addition to cheering on aspiring amateurs, audiences spend pregame moments rollicking to concerts on select dates or recruiting ringers for their company’s intramural piñata-whacking league.
The Comedy Club sticks to the basics: nationally known acts; booze, burgers, fried foods; one microphone; and a brick wall. Renowned standups Jim Norton, Tom Green, Orlando Jones, and the late Patrice O'Neal have all graced the stage, and regularly scheduled Open Mic nights fuel an eternal search for undiscovered talent. The club proves its commitment to local humorists in its annual Funniest Person in Rochester Contest, semester-long classes on standup comedy, and always remembering their birthdays.
Led by head coach Jesse Myers, who made several significant player acquisitions before the season, the Rochester Rhinos look to ramp up their scoring prowess for 2012. A member of the USL Pro league, the team incites cheers from loyal fans and whimpers from jostled gophers when playing on its home pitch at Sahlen's Stadium.
