Meletio Lighting & Electrical Supply's professional, enthusiastic staff helps customers navigate two show rooms packed with hundreds of light fixtures from a lengthy roster of brands. Resembling shining twin clones of the Liberty Bell before Benjamin Franklin wired it to his amplifier, a pair of flawless Turinian Scavo glass lamps illuminates bathrooms from a wooden wall perch ($59.90). Joselyn candleholders position a transparent amber glass shell atop a curved, antiqued bronze base to cast a quaint, homey glow ($125.95 for a set of two). Five glass-enclosed lights delicately dwell on slender arched arms extending from the Courtney Lakes rubbed-bronze chandelier, which dangles from a 5-foot-long chain and receives power from a 10-foot-long wire and deep meditation ($159.95). The elegant Mia ceiling fan with bowl light ($171) illuminates domiciles while sweeping along lollygagging air currents with a three-speed reversible motor.

Drew Johnson and his friend Jordan harbored a secret dream to own a thrift shop from the earliest years of their friendship, as far back as middle school. They schemed for years, and when a space opened in the heart of the community where they both grew up, they didn’t hesitate. The duo opened Urban Thrift, stocking it with recycled and reusable clothing, jewelry, appliances, and furniture.

Though they keep it spotlessly clean, Drew and Jordan still celebrate the raw, urban feel of their space. “Our dressing room utilizes cinder blocks and gas piping, our ceiling is exposed, our floor is unfinished concrete, and that’s how we like it,” said Drew. They don’t forget the community that fostered them and their dream, either, giving donations to local churches and school clubs.

A kaleidoscope of colors and patterns bewilders shoppers as they enter either of Quilter’s Stash's two locations. Some confused patrons report having found the end of the rainbow, but they are really seeing more than 15,000 bolts of 100% cotton fabrics by Marcus, Henry Glass, and other top designers. Staff members wait at attention to direct customers to the latest threads and patterns, and a few on-hand wizards can resuscitate a range of sewing machines from different brands. The crafty gurus are also enthusiastic about leading quilting and sewing classes that cater to students of all levels, and the shop's shelves are stocked with how-to books that facilitate at-home learning.
