At Tiger's Den Crossfit, it isn't enough to focus solely on strength, flexibility, or endurance. Doing so is tantamount to regressing, because it ignores the other seven primary areas of fitness?among them accuracy, agility, and speed. The Tiger's Den coaches point to the bengal tiger as an animal that has all 10 in spades, and encourage their students to work for improvement in every category. A Workout of the Day may include swinging kettlebells, dead-lifting barbells, performing laps on the rowing machine, or jumping rope?all at a very high intensity. Since every exercise is scalable, people of all ages and fitness levels participate in every workout, contributing to an atmosphere of support and inclusiveness.
Instructors John Mariotti, a sixth-degree tae kwon do black belt, and Ellie McKenzie, a CrossFit-certified trainer, lead CrossFit Odyssey and Odyssey Martial Arts to raise their clients to new levels of personal and physical excellence. In martial-arts classes, Mariotti, combines the best elements of TaeKwon-Do, Brazilian jujitsu, and other martial arts to create a self-defense system that breeds fitness and the character of a true warrior. Mariotti's system teaches adults and children to embody fairness, integrity, confidence, and strength.
Conditioning is a top priority of the system, but it's not the only way clients can open their sweat valves. Mariotti and McKenzie, both CrossFit Games competitors, keep a strong focus on fitness with CrossFit classes. There, they utilize kettlebells, ropes, and a slew of weight-training equipment to tone up and slim down clients using CrossFit's specially designed, daily-changing functional-movement exercises.
Sandy, the owner of Choose Again Yoga, is used to heat. She spends most of her time in her 95-degree studio, stretching and bending through asanas with her students. Keeping most classes appropriate for beginners, she focuses on the healing qualities of yoga. Her series of poses, in addition to limbering up the body, releases toxins from tissues with a healthy sweat. Her favorite pose, however, remains the relaxing savasana, during which the yogi simply lays still on the floor while breathing deeply, allowing the mind to experience a sense of oneness with its environment.
Students at Grapevine Martial Arts and H-E-B Martial Arts learn integrity, self defense, confidence, and self-discipline through classes taught masters Jean, Scott, and Christy Good, who each wield more than 25 years of marital arts experience. Within the safe haven of a familial environment, pupils as young as age 4 engage in classes rooted in Youn Wha Ryu Tae Kwon Do, which incorporate elements of Hapkido, Karate Kung Fu and Judo. The studio's mirror classrooms house two-inch padded floors while an on-sit pro shop outfits students with the proper combative tools.
