The Jacksonville Humane Society provides care, comfort and compassion to animals in need while bringing an end to the killing of abandoned and orphaned shelter dogs and cats. For a combined animal hospital, shelter and thrift store, this Beach Boulevard outpost is one of the largest animal rescue organizations in the city. Aside from adopting available animals, there are volunteer opportunities, fundraising events, a kid’s summer day camp program and a pet behavior resource and hotline, while the attached store sells all manner of animal-related items. The Jacksonville Humane Society has designated areas to view animals from adult dogs and a puppy room to the cat rooms.

The scene is a familiar one: hotel guests lounge beside the outdoor pool as staff members filter around, offering refreshments or collecting clients for a spa treatment. However, at Pet Paradise, the pool is bone shaped and all the guests are dogs. This luxurious scene is one cat and dog owners can find at this boarding and daycare facility that has been owner Fred Goldsmith's pride and joy for a decade. The animal lover was inspired to start his own pet hotel when he simply couldn’t find a place he was comfortable leaving his bichon frise when he went on vacation.

Fred made Pet Paradise to his exact specifications, and the pet hotel's amenities reflect the loving care he lavishes on his own beloved pup. Dogs and cats can luxuriate in spa-quality grooming treatments or burn off some energy during group playtime. In the evening, pets can settle into plush bedding and feel safe knowing that the dedicated live-in staff resides just a bark away. Nocturnal kitties spend the night exploring their own private six-level cat condos while gentle spa music fills the air to keep them entertained. In case of any emergencies, Pet Paradise keeps veterinarians on-call, and in the event of a snack emergency, each staff member is a certified bacon cook.

In addition to a 10-acre hiking trail and one-arce swimming lake, Dog Wood Park offers a 25-acre enclosed field that lets pooches free to shirk their leashes and gambol with other dogs. Here, a sand pit invites unchecked digging, trees offer ample shade, and two swimming ponds help canines cool off. Though the atmosphere is playful, the park does have a few rules to maintain a safe space for dogs, owners, and mailmen. Male dogs must be neutered, for instance, and all owners must show proof of their pooch?s rabies vaccination. To ensure clean coats and picturesque scenery, bag stations, trash cans, and bathing stations abound.

Redbones Dog Bakery and Boutique boasts a bevy of fresh treats to appease canine appetites, with a menu ranging from cheddar and garlic studded cheesy bones ($5.99/half-pound) to scoops of peanut butter and banana frozen dogurt ($1.50). Crunchy mint and parsley breath mints ($5.99) transform the panting mouths of halitosis-stricken hounds into vessels of aromatherapy, and indecisive hound handlers can purchase a half-pound assortment of Redbones’ most popular concoctions ($5.99). All treats are baked fresh daily and sweetened naturally with honey, vanilla, and banana rather than sugar.

A shuttle bus pulls up to the curb, and a Dogs Rule staff member leads another drowsy charge to its front porch. This pooch is knackered, having spent all day carousing at Dogs Rule, a leash-free dog-care facility whose wall-mounted “BEWARE OF THE DOG” sign belies the canine camaraderie within. As pooches enter the facility, the staff separates them into groups according to age, temperament, and size, and watches over the pups as they wrestle in the outdoor play lot’s dirt, chase soap bubbles, splash in the pool, or strategize table-side manners in the play house. Overnight guests—whether feline or canine—bunk down in crates at night. Dogs Rule's groomer Diane Lyons, herself an owner of four dogs, backs up her passion for canine coiffures with 29 years of grooming experience.

During their pets’ time at Dogs Rule, owners can opt for grooming sessions or vaccinations at an additional charge. All proceeds from the facility benefit the nonprofit AHHHHA, which finds homes for abandoned animals and offers low-cost spay and neuter services to pet owners.
