Sand shipped fresh from Florida covers Stratford Sand Volleyball’s three courts, cushioning players as they jump, dive, and lunge for the ball. With leagues four nights a week and tournaments on weekends, there’s ample opportunity to test skills on these courts or spectate on the adjacent patio, which stretches across 4,000 square feet. A nearby bar, just steps from the courts, helps keep the fun going in between games.
In place of what once was a sand mine, Crystal City Underground has transformed more than 6 million square feet?approximately 200 acres?of sub-surface space into a climate-controlled entertainment facility. With 30- to 40-foot ceilings, thick pillars carved out of rock, and a lake, it presents visitors with a multifaceted underground experience, one that already includes sand volleyball, disc golf, and weekend barge rides. Future plans for Crystal City have it adding more recreational amenities en route to becoming a subterranean cultural and convention center.
Patrons may have to look extra carefully to find Fallout Frenzy Laser Tag. That's because the laser-tag arena dispatches sharpshooters in an underground battlefield, home to a former sand mine and complete with strange cave structures and ceilings that reach heights of up to 40 feet. Additionally, because games unfurl underground in a climate-controlled environment, players never have to deal with rain, snow, or clouds shaped like ex–best friends.
