On Saturday, May 3, Hudsonville Fairgrounds will transform into a magical kingdom where craft beers from 30 Michigan breweries flow freely. The Beer City Spring Fest, as it's called, features some big names in the small-batch world, including local favorites Founders, Bell's, and Dark Horse.

Representatives from each brewery will dole out samples of their sudsy products in exchange for drink tickets, a handful of which come with VIP admission. Guests can purchase more drink tickets at the event if they want to drink more or simply desire a tiny paper garnish. The BCSF is hosted by the American Legion, meaning that proceeds will go toward the nation's largest wartime veterans service organization.

When Bill White and his future wife, Jenn, first moved in together, they soon realized they had one possession in common: a Williams Brewing kit. It wasn't long before the couple started homebrewing in their garage, a hobby that gradually transformed into White Flame Brewing Co., the first brewery in the formerly dry city of Hudsonville. Specializing in American-style ales, the microbrewery now yields everything from a spicy rye ale to a chocolaty oatmeal stout.

Thirteen beers and one cider grace the company's 48-seat taproom, where visitors can sample pours and catch the game on flat-screen televisions throughout the bar. In-house cooks craft a handful of bar bites, though White Flame invites guests to order delivery from nearby restaurants, too.The brewery even sends patrons on their way with beers-to-go in quart-sized howlers, half-gallon growlers, or beer-filled kiddie pools.

Minister Edgar J. Helms founded Goodwill at the turn of the 20th century to support the unemployed immigrant population of Boston. He gathered unwanted household items and hired the immigrants to refurbish them for resale. Over time, the operation grew into a comprehensive job-skills training and placement program.

In the past 90 years, Goodwill Industries has played an integral role in communities nationwide by placing nearly 90,000 individuals into jobs. Each purchase helps fund programs that help people with barriers to employment find work, and the stores themselves serve as a training site for participants to gain work experience.

Coaches of Renewal Body Bootcamp coaxes hard work, discipline, and buckets of sweat from fitness-seekers during her intense, full-body workouts. One of her specialties is TRX resistance training, which involves suspending students by their arms, legs, and torsos from straps and harnesses dangling from the ceiling. Exercises require participants to fight gravity and their own body weight to build muscle. Coaches sometimes combines TRX with Pilates core-strengthening work or a rigorous plyometric regimen, mixing up workout routines daily to maximize effectiveness. In addition to physical training, she supplies students with nutritional counseling that measures appropriate caloric intake by the day, creating balanced diets that supply ample energy without extra carbs, fats, or whatever compound butter is made of.
