Undead Music Festival celebrates the eternal pioneers of New York's instrumental and jazz scene with four nights of artist-oriented concerts and events. The jubilee of jams kicks off with Wednesday night's marathon of concerts at Le Poisson Rouge. Audience members migrate as freely as birds with jetpacks between the three neighboring venues. Playing Le Poisson Rouge that night are Elysian Fields, where Jennifer Charles's sultry vocals breeze over dark instrumentals, and Ben Perowsky's Moodswing Orchestra with TK Wonder, whose vocals infuse the bare, layered trip-hop with a subdued intensity. Sullivan Hall features Stabbing Eastward, with Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio notoriety, and the Chicago Underground Duo grace Kenny's Castaways with a mature sound, rooted in jazz fusion.

Intimate and minimalist in black lacquer and exposed brick, the Canal Room is as comfortable hosting '80s and '90s parties with celebrity impersonators as it is with A-list concerts starring Jay-Z, Elvis Costello, or John Legend. A VIP lounge area lined with palms and ebony booths flank a bright hardwood dance floor, where concerts and parties unfold. The calendar entices families and VIPs alike, and the facility also makes way for private events such as birthday parties and echo contests.

The guides at Great Food Tours have teeth so sweet it's amazing they don't dissolve in coffee. Maybe that's why they display such an affinity for dessert-themed city tours. The dark-chocolate underbellies of New York, Chicago, Washington D.C., New Orleans, London, and Paris expose themselves in cocoa-themed tours across the globe. A few of these renowned culinary cities also offer ambulatory tastings of a different sort. Visitors in New York can go on a voyage into Italian food, and a food tour of London dispels undeserved stereotypes with a lineup of English cheeses, hearty pub fare, and a classic platter of fish and chips. Through Great Food Tours, taste buds get in on the vacation spirit, and maybe get upgraded to taste best friends.

A space measuring 17,000 square feet is generally unheard of in New York City, but Buddakan fills out its two-story Chelsea Market frame with elegance. Enormous wooden chandeliers dangle in the main dining hall, where embellished walls alternate with floor-to-ceiling mirrors to create a backdrop appropriate for the room's centerpiece, a candle-specked table that Crain’s writer Bob Lape called “dragon-length.” When Buddakan is at full capacity, a warm staff, dim lighting, and the din of almost 300 guests make the cavernous space more intimate, though the real draw, says Lape, is the food: “The pleasingly original dishes are more than worthy of the visual exposure.” Chef Michael Schulson lets his Asian culinary inspirations show with a modern approach that New York Magazine deemed “more lively than anything you’ll find in Chinatown.” Edamame-filled dumplings and other dim sum whet palates for entrees such as the minced pork lo mein, sweet-and-crispy jumbo shrimp, and whole peking duck.
