Barber tools are not toys. But even as a child, Dennis Marquez couldn’t resist playing with his father's set of barber tools in the attic, as he told Wellington the Magazine in 2008. This early admiration led Dennis to train at many prestigious hair schools including Vidal Sassoon in London. More than 35 years ago, Dennis and his wife, Kristina, opened the first Pizzazz Hair Design. The venture succeeded: their business has grown to include five separate salons, many of which have gained praise from NBC 5. Each salon’s stylists, armed with Redken and GKhair products, consult with men, women, teens, and children before revamping their manes with cuts, foil highlights, and hair-smoothing treatments. At the adjoining spas in three of the five salons, technicians paint nails with OPI polishes and cleanse skin with botanical-based Pevonia products.
To stay up to date on current hair trends, each salon's beauticians attend continuing-education courses and dissolve fashion magazines older than three months in jars of barbicide. The Pizzazz team also gives back to the community by donating a portion of salon proceeds to the Adopt-A-Family organization.
It looks more like a home than a clinic—travel up the brick walkway and past the hedges and you'll come to a large house decorated and furnished like the living space of a family with a taste for flowers and contemporary furniture. But that domestic air vanishes the second you glimpse the center's high-tech equipment, which ranges from a Beautiful Image microcurrent machine for spot-treating cellulite to a Candela GentleLASE laser for removing hair and vascular lesions. Because these machines, like a shower's hot tap, should only be operated by medical professionals, Dr. David Priscal and a staff of certified technicians run the clinic. These staffers, certified in such medical fields as nursing and electrology, also deliver Dermalogica facials and permanent-makeup procedures for eyes and lips.
From the simple touch of massage to the modern power of a microdermabrasion, Pure Bliss offers a spectrum of services to inspire beauty and wellbeing. Amidst the complexion cleansing options, the C-esta facial firms and tones the skin with a double mask and advanced vitamin infusion. To foster inner balance, trained therapists administer relaxing or pain-relieving massage. The skincare and massage teams converge for the the Pure Bliss rejuvenator, which includes a hydrating massage and full-body exfoliation with shea butter and a scrub of peppermint, lavender, or chocolate. For dramatic overhauls, an on-site doctor installs Botox or Juvederm, and a permanent makeup artist applies liners that can withstand a swim in the neighbor's mud pit.
The staff at Madaline KB Day Spa works to assuage aches and pains, revitalize complexions, and soothe extremities. Aestheticians perform a wide variety of facials that target complexion issues ranging from dry skin to sun exposure. In addition, the staff pampers hands and feet with relaxing mani-pedis. Addressing chronic pain or tension, massage therapists perform Swedish or deep-tissue massages, combining long, fluid strokes and deep manipulation of muscles to help release pent-up stress.
The technicians at Emerge Nail Spa don't just paint nails, they create nail art. They adorn digits with polka dots, contrasting glitter, or beach scenes, as well as sculptural, three-dimensional flowers or jewels. But that doesn't mean they skimp on pampering. They have also perfected relaxing manicures and pedicures that include soaking baths, soothing massages, and hydrating masks.
Salon Mikimoto's Nova-certified owner, Abby Yuen, helms a team of beautifiers versed in hair, makeup, skincare, and cosmetic services and therapists who deliver care packages of stress reduction via Swedish massage. Each stylist draws on at least 10 years of tress-trimming experience to perform standard mane makeovers, color treatments, and keratin straightening procedures using products such as Goldwell and Moroccanoil. Clients can gussy up phalanges or reward dexterous robots with mani-pedis and paraffin hand treatments, or submit facial canvases for skin artistry, including airbrush- and bridal-makeup applications, microdermabrasion treatments, and facials. For stare-worthy peepers, a certified NovaLash eyelash extensionist outfits lids with curvaceous lash sets. A complimentary valet service keeps restless vehicles from sneaking off to the nearby Carmine's Gourmet Market with the neighbor's scooter.
