What inspired you or the owner (if that?s not you) to start or run this business?
The beauty and wonderous nature of being surrounded by Hawaiian culture, flora, fauna and wonderful people inspires us daily to share this mystical place with our guests.
What?s your favorite part about your job?
Knowing that I get to introduce the local culture to our guests and share it in a way that few ever experience in their lifetime.
What makes your business stand out?
The experience of [zip-lining] in, under and through the rain forest canopy, and gliding on Segways through real Hawaiiana tasting fruits and spices [to learn] about the wonders of the gardens and her history is an experience never to forget.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
There is a feeling that comes over our guests. One that interweaves peace and harmony with nature with the excitement and fun that comes from the adventures we offer. It is an amazing combination.
What is the best reaction you?ve ever gotten from a customer?
Tears of joy from a woman that celebrated her 90th birthday by flying through the rainforest on the zip line. I am sure she will have a smile on her face on her last day from that memory.
Costa Rica's central Pacific coast attracts the majority the country's tourism, and for good reason. Pristine beaches, national parks with incredible biodiversity, and world-class surfing share a relatively small piece of the map. About 6 miles (10 km) south of the hotel, the town of Jaco buzzes with backpackers and locals alike who haunt its beachside restaurants and nightclubs between heavy surf and sun sessions. A few more miles down the coast, Playa Hermosa's black sands afford a unique photo op, and about 25 miles (40 km) south of the resort, the largely deserted beaches of Playa Esterillos Oeste give intrepid travelers a place to consider the top five albums they couldn't live without. Immediately northeast of Hotel Punta Leona, Carara National Park sprawls across 14 square miles (36 sq. km) of protected forest, cut through with hiking trails along the banks of the Rio Tarcoles, where crocodiles are often spotted sunning.Read the Fine Print for important info on travel dates and other restrictions.
Humdinger Sportfishing's resident skipper, Jeff Fay, brings more than 40 years of deep-sea-fishing experience aboard his 37-foot fishing vessel. Passengers command the boat's supply of sturdy Penn International rods and reels, which can withstand the prodigious strength of tuna, blue marlin, and seahorses riding land horses. A proponent of conservationism and catch-and-release fishing, Jeff lets fishers take home their hard-fought nautical prizes but confers extra environmental brownie points on those who tag and release their catches, which helps to preserve populations and aids local research efforts.
Explore coastal caves and rock formations. Walk past active lava flows and tubes. Paddle through schools of tropical fish against the underwater landscape of a reef. These outdoor adventures make up the daily commute for the five guides who helm Hawaii Pack and Paddle. In addition to belonging to the same family, these guides—each certified lifeguards trained in first aid and CPR—share a passion for the untamed splendor of Hawaii's outdoors. It's a passion they bestow upon others during 10 organized tours that challenge participants to kayak, snorkel, and embark on day or night hikes.
As a fully-insured kayak and snorkel-tour company, Hawaii Pack and Paddle sometimes leads forays into little-seen areas, such as the rugged Keauhou Bay or the cave where high-school senior Tiffany keeps her diary. Some tours lead adventurers through the lava flows and jungles of Volcanoes National Park, along the shore of Punaluu Black Sand Beach, or past the waterfalls and ridges of Waipi'o. Other tours focus on special topics such as spear-fishing and underwater geological exploration. Alternatively, multi-day tours may blend several outdoor activities or include overnight camping. On each excursion, guides elucidate facts about the local ecosystem and its ties to Hawaii's cultural history, and they often train participants in one of their favorite skills: marine-life identification.
Falling in love with Hawaii is easy?for some, all it takes is the first breath of balmy air after stepping out of an airplane or homemade rocket ship from the mainland. But Pat and Lisa Christian, the married couple behind Home Tours Hawaii, help people to deepen their love of the big island by offering a glimpse into its heart. They take groups beyond main streets and hotels, leading them into private homes and gardens to enjoy progressive brunches. While munching on multiple courses made with Big Island ingredients and sipping estate-grown Kona coffee, guests feast their eyes on stunning views of nature and architectural features such as ohia posts, lanais overlooking the ocean, and indoor koi ponds.
