Bodies turn and twirl in the air, suspended from the rafters with colorful silks. Whether during a performance or class, the staff and students of Voler–Thieves of Flight Aerial Academy inspire awe with aerial dance and acrobatics. The academy’s professional ensemble includes ballet and modern dancers, along with circus artists, all of whom add their skills to lofty choreography on swings, silks, and hoops. The Voler ensemble has also performed at more than 30 notable locations including the Kansas city and Chicago fringe festivals and the Kansas City Renaissance Festival.
The academy’s primary purpose is teaching, of course, and three levels of classes instruct participants on the finer points of contorting on silks and practicing spirals, suspension, and falls.
"Cooking: Possible" splits the spotlight between celebrity chef Robert Irvine, star of the Food Network's Dinner: Impossible and Restaurant: Impossible, and Jonathon Sawyer, sous chef for Michael Symon on Iron Chef America and owner of Greenhouse Tavern. During the show, the hash-slinging savants pepper engaging cooking demos with video segments from Irvine's popular television series. A large screen perched above the stage pours elaborate views of each dish into the audience, including detailed close-ups and a kiss cam for snuggling potatoes.
With 38 years of teaching experience and a certified national examiner for Dance Masters of America in tap, ballet, jazz, acrobatics, and modern, owner and instructor Kathi Nallia expertly guides students through the mysteries of movement. Aspiring hoofers of any age may enroll in a number of classes, whether it’s for improving energy and flexibility or saving the local summer camp from foreclosure in a marathon dance-off. Students are welcome to explore the expressive grace of ballet, jazz, or tap in the Adult Dance class, land a leading role with instruction in the Musical Theatre Training course, or show a toddler the basics of rhythm in Artistic Tots. Nallia's considerate dance instructors will patiently work with students of all kinds, whether they're competitive tap dancers or haven't danced since Bob Dole's "The Funkadelic-In-Chief" presidential campaign. Walk-ins are not accepted, as the instructor registers students on a first-come, first-served basis. Different classes are available six days a week. Call ahead for schedules.
A rigid Western obsession with time tables and organized schedules has left the American spirit dangerously confined. Today's Groupon offers improvisation, the well-paved road to free thinking, with a ticket to see The Trip Fives Improv Comedy live at the Westport Coffeehouse on January 9 at 6:30 p.m. for $5. Welcome in a new year with unstale jokes you can't see coming, despite your resolution to nurture clairvoyance.
In a city rich in jazz heritage, the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra culls some of the finest saxophonists, trumpeters, trombonists, and rhythm players from the local scene to revivify music from jazz's booming big-band era. During the "Tribute to Gerry Mulligan" concert, the orchestra revisits the legendary baritone saxophonist's repertoire, backed up by the musician's longtime rhythm section of bassist Dean Johnson and drummer Ron Vincent. Along with Miles Davis, Mulligan helped fuel the cool-jazz movement, inspiring other players to tone down their tempos, lighten the tones, and wear sunglasses at night. Although his songs marked a sophisticated revolution for the genre, they also contained gritty, soulful elements mimetic of Mulligan's edgy personal life, including a drug arrest that the Guardian named the 20th key event in the history of jazz music, coming in right behind the day Charlie Parker blew a newborn dove out of his saxophone.
