Q&A with Sheila Juenger, Manager

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?

Our facility is on located on Maple Woods Community College campus, and we offer an educated staff that can help a person work on their individual fitness goals at their level. Our goal is to help everyone feel comfortable joining our facility. We offer individual exercise programs, personal training, nutrition counseling, and a variety of free group classes that people of any fitness level can attend.

What is the biggest mistake you see people make when trying to get fit on their own?

The biggest mistake I think people make is they don't have a plan. They would like to get into shape, better their health, and lose weight, but they don't have a plan. Most people have great intentions and know what to do but may need additional help and guidance to help reach their goals.

When and how did you first develop a passion for fitness?

The staff at Maple Woods Fitness Center believe in overall health?not just what someone looks like on the outside. A healthy body is a strong and fit body. We focus on your fitness goals but also recognize that a health is very important that is why we focus on nutrition as well as provide a well rounded exercise program to help meet your goals. Our full time instructors have bachelors degrees in fitness and wellness, and both have certifications in exercise nutrition.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

The Maple Woods Fitness facility is predominately used by the public as well as MCC students and offers a variety of memberships. We are located on the second floor of the Northland Human Service Building and are surrounded by windows so you never feel like you are working out in a dungeon. To tour our facility, simply stop by during our hours of operation and we will be happy to show you around and answer any questions you may have.

Crossroads Bootcamp’s seasoned instructors challenge students to exceed their fitness goals at 60-minute boot-camp-style workouts and CrossFit sessions. In addition to teaching participants how to stop time with an intense stare, boot-camp classes sculpt the entire body with intense cardio and the strength-building power of barbells, kettlebells, and medicine balls. Like interpretations of traffic laws, no two boot-camp workouts are identical, which keeps minds and muscles on their proverbial toes. CrossFit sessions team small groups of exercisers with an inspiring coach to practice strength-and-conditioning exercises that, though challenging, can be scaled to suit any fitness level. The intense workouts and disciplined mindset of CrossFit training makes it a popular choice among police, martial-arts trainers, and cops who specialize in capturing rogue martial artists.

Each Crossroads class unfurls in a 4,500-square-foot loft studio, which provides ample room for Herculean barbell lifts and spontaneous zeppelin crashes. Classes are scheduled seven days a week.

At Rox Extreme Fitness, exercisers are part of the family. Fortunately, this family bonds through hauling mammoth truck tires and works out frustrations with speedy jump rope reps. This unorthodox approach to fitness--you won't find cushy locker rooms or flashy stair machines here--incorporates brawny gear including sledgehammers, bricks, and chains. It also pays serious dividends. The gym's six instructors see to that. Adhering to goal of 1% improvement from one session to the next, they help students buff up gradually no matter their fitness level or goals.

Freight House Fitness was once filled with syrup. Before kettle bells and squat racks were moved in, the century-old building was occupied by the Bliss Syrup company. Located in the West Bottoms, it has a very rustic appearance?which Freight House founders Sean and Kendra decided to keep in tact and build around. Though you won't find a brown bear reading a newspaper on the porch, the facility achieves a cozy, almost cabin-like vibe thanks to exposed rafters, weathered wood beams, and a wood floor.

Head instructors Sean and Kendra team up to offer group and personal training sessions, as well as calorie-crushing boot camp classes. The duo fuses its knowledge with a wide assortment of equipment, including punching bags, a strength sled, and even sand bags.

Aided by National Academy of Sports Medicine certifications in personal training and corrective exercise, LiveSet Fitness's Michael Kilkenny strives to inspire positive lifestyle changes through physical fitness. During his boot-camp classes, he leads high-intensity interval training, marrying cardio and kickboxing with strength and conditioning drills to create a comprehensive training program. When he needs to emphasize more customized fitness regimens, he also hosts one-on-one and group personal-training sessions, which give clients the chance to work toward personal goals or ask in private if burpees were named after a convenience-store beverage.
