Captained by extensively experienced staffers, The Plaza Tennis Center invites racquets to swing in private and group lessons, tennis leagues, and tournaments. Private sessions for adults and children home in on individual skills customized around student goals and styles of play, while group classes pit pairs of friends and prefriends in calorie-burning drills emphasizing repetition and situational point play. Meanwhile, leagues pair similarly matched players in social beginner pairings, coed World Team Tennis formations, or Flex groups. The Plaza Tennis Center also hosts an array of tournaments on its 14 outdoor courts?each recently resurfaced, lighted, and tinted in U.S. Open colors?where players of all ages and levels of experience face off over the net.

The martial-arts masters at AKKA Karate USA specialize in kenpo karate, a unique form that builds muscle tone and reflexes in order to use the body’s natural weapons—hands and feet—for self-defense. In addition to kenpo, they also lead classes focused on MMA, tai chi, and weapons training. Often, AKKA holds special events such as tournaments and sparring seminars. In addition to learning self-defense techniques, students also build valuable life skills such as an appreciation for fitness, discipline, and self-confidence.

Staffed by veteran dancers, Toyman introduces prospective prancers to the ins and outs of an array of Latin dances. Three trained instructors, who perfected their craft at a variety of studios and theaters, lead students in rhythmic explorations of salsa, merengue, cha-cha, and other festive steps. Couples dance classes can prepare brides and grooms for magical matrimonial displays of elegance or help long-time spouses one-up their foxtrotting neighbors and Charlestoning children.

When Roald Dahl wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, he imagined a much-coveted golden ticket that granted access to myriad wonders and unveiled the inner workings of an entire industry. MetaBody created a real-life version of that ticket with the MetaBody Yoga & Fitness Pass, though it applies to fitness instead of candy. The pass grants access not to a single gym but to classes at a variety of local studios, specializing in everything from yoga to boot camp. With the freedom to move from location to location, students can sample different regimens, instructors, and styles of exercise to cobble together a program that fits their needs and goals. MetaBody's nutritionists supplement class packages by coaching clients in healthy eating, recipe cooking, and speed-reading nutrition-fact labels.

It?s hard to make new friends in a park; but, thanks to KC Crew, friendships have been blossoming all over Roanoke Park, Parade Park, and Penn Valley Park. The secret to their success is rec leagues, in which players compete in kickball, flag football, soccer, softball, and sand volleyball, a beachy sport far preferable to speed eating shells. The organization provides umpires, a game schedule, and a $100 credit at eight local bars awarded to the winning team each week. And after the sun goes down, the organization offers more in-depth studies of the area nightlife through bar crawls, themed to celebrate holidays such as St. Patrick?s Day or simulate a zombie apocalypse.

On June 8, runners converge on Union Hill and the Martini Corner Entertainment District for a four-mile relay race through the streets of Kansas City. Divided into teams of four, each competitor carries a baton in their hand or mouth as they dash through a one-mile portion of the route before handing the stick off to the next teammate. Those who chart the best times will be recognized with post-race awards for the fastest men's, women's, co-ed, and corporate teams. After the race, the lure of live music emanates from nearby bars Velvet Dog and Martini Corner, where a post-race party welcomes runners to replenish with included drinks and socialize with fellow runners. Proceeds from the race will benefit Ozanam Guild, a 65-year-old institution that provides care and support for children and families in need. Since opening its doors in 1948, Ozanam Guild has helped more than 7,000 troubled children secure a better future through therapeutic care and academic assistance.
