When her laser makes a successful hit, the speakers in her vest fire with computer-voiced congratulations, while at the other end, her opponent's vest vibrates to ensure he knows he was tagged. Those are just two of the engrossing features of Jaegerz Laser Tag’s Lasertron equipment that help players get into the game. Opponents open fire on one another with a single pop or even a rapid burst of laser fire as they take cover behind black-lit obstacles. Players can find plenty of places to duck and run in the 6,000 square foot arena’s fog-filled room while strobe lights work to disorient players. Guests can also arrange to have birthday parties and private events held at the facility for corporate groups, scout groups, and large birthday parties.

Voted Best Bowling on the Kansas City A-List in 2008 and 2009, Gladstone Bowl has entertained strikers, rollers, and turkeys for more than 50 years. Ditch the usual weekend routine of sitting at home in the dark and come experience galactic bowling, where you can bowl in the dark. Gladstone Bowl is transformed as black lights hypnotize regular lights into setting the alley aglow. Send radiant comets shooting down a glimmering lane as neon lights tango with the pins. Spirited music sets rental-clad feet in motion, and automatic scoring flashes above each sleek lane on an overhead screen, announcing winners, losers, and innovatively concise nicknames.

Any amateur golfer who has ever wondered what separates their swing from that of a pro can find out at Martin City Sports Complex. The sports haven's ModelGolf system compares fledgling swings with an analyzed composite of more than 120 PGA and LPGA pros, charting the similarities and differences. Afterward, golfers can take that information and work toward the ideal at the complex's 28-person double-decker driving range, where heated stalls host year-round practice and keep winter players from mistaking a snowball for a golf ball. And as swings become more refined, the resident club expert, Bert Benjamin, can create a club custom-fitted to each player.

Although golf—in both regular-sized and miniature form—is undeniably the focus at Martin City, it's not the only sport celebrated there. Paintball finds its place with both a speedball area and wooded arena, which players ride to in a real army truck. Each summer, athletes can also find a small sliver of the Atlantic beach in Kansas City by stepping up to the net at Martin City's sand volleyball courts.

Cyclists to the last, the staff at Trek Bicycle Store take pride in the work they do, and they’re just as happy to sit and talk about the best bike routes in the city as they are to find the right part for a customer. If your bike's broken, the repair technicians can fix it—they work on all makes and models, and keep themselves updated on technology via annual educational clinics. And they offer a customer-loyalty promise that includes price-protection guarantees, satisfaction guarantees, and the assurance that if your bike somehow grows a third wheel, it is due to radiation and we are not responsible.

The store’s shelves brim with accessories such as pedal wrenches, tool kits, and bike chains, all compatible with any of the shop’s bikes. Outfits are available for hardcore riders or bikes that want to dress up as bike riders for Halloween.

The golfing gurus at Edwin Watts Golf Academy diagnose and correct their students' poor swing and putting habits in an effort to help them improve their shots and lower their scores. In one-on-one swing-analysis sessions, students learn a repeatable swing that eliminates tendencies they may have to slice, hook, push, or pull the ball. A special laser attaches to the end of the player's club and tracks the swing path while JC Video swing-analysis software records the session from two separate angles, lest analysis be thrown off by only looking at the golfer's good side. Putting analysis employs Tomi technology to measure eight separate parameters of the putting stroke, from clubhead orientation at address to swing path and tempo. After swing and putting lessons, students may access the recordings on a password-protected website, so they can forward videos to friends or sports-documentary filmmakers.
