Firefighter, paramedic, and certified personal trainer Kamil Escobar has been helping his clients achieve their fitness goals for more than 14 years. His energetic outdoor boot camps incorporate calisthenics, muay thai, cardio, and strength training, and he strives to make each class challenging as well as interesting, with new activities each time. All his students need to bring are a mat and a bottle of water?he brings an entire gym's worth of equipment to the camps' park setting, arming classes with kettle bells, barbells, dumbbells, and other gear. To keep students motivated, Escobar utilizes the six years of experience that he has working with kids in the fitness field. He mixes up his fitness regimens with exciting games, such as dodgeball, kickball, and tug-of-war.
A gym designed exclusively for women, Lady of America offers its members accoutrements that coed gyms can’t. For starters, all of the weight-training equipment is sized for females and equipped with 5-pound weight increments, allowing for more useful adjustments than the typical machinery. Beyond the weight room, the open gym offers plenty of cardio machines, including treadmills, bikes, and elliptical trainers. In order to personalize workouts even further, members can also meet with one of the club's trained and certified personal trainers, or talk food with the onsite dietitian. When solo training starts to get lonely, the gym’s group fitness classes challenge muscles while building camaraderie during sessions such as Butt Lift, Step It Up, and Zumba. While members sweat, their children can play at the onsite daycare center— for an additional fee— stocked with plenty of toys and miniature Stairmasters.
At Magic City CrossFit, athletes forge stronger bodies by flipping tires and snapping kettlebells into the air. Classes use CrossFit’s philosophy of varied, interval workouts to build dynamic core strength through sessions that can be scaled to meet the fitness level of each participant. The gym also offers boot-camp classes for a more streamlined, weightlifting-free workout, as well as yoga sessions to build valuable flexibility.
Jeozette Latorre didn’t stop after earning her ISSA personal training certification. The dedicated owner of F4 Boot Camp went on to claim certifications in the TRX Suspension Trainer, as well as in TacFit—the official training program for federal law enforcers, US Marshalls, and the US Army. Yet, Jeozette doesn’t expect her boot camp clients to take down criminals or arm wrestle the mayor. Rather, she has one simple goal for her students: to live a more fulfilled life.
F4's indoor and outdoor women’s boot camp classes have played a part in numerous success stories, ranging from weight loss to nixing the need for blood-pressure medication. Classes, which convene four days a week, incorporate TacFit-inspired calisthenics and body-weight exercises into an intense 45-minute workout designed to not only torch calories, but also boost moods. “We’re trying to introduce TacFit to women so they can be more physically and psychologically prepared to handle stress,” says Jeozette.
Whether they're toting around excess fat or carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders, Jeozette's students can become physically and figuratively stronger during the camp's constantly changing workouts, supplemented by customized meal plans that outline what to eat along with how to chew and swallow.
An addiction. That?s what Cheryl Mullin, head trainer at Tone You Up, Inc., calls her relationship with fitness. Starting out as a dancer at the age of 5, she transitioned into cheerleading in high school and eventually track and field in college, where she fell in love with lifting, plyometrics, and circuit training. Ten years and three certifications later, Cheryl and her staff of dedicated trainers pass their passion on to others with their three pillars of training: fitness, nutrition, and overall health.
Groups sprint and lunge across Tropical or Palmetto Bay Park during intense, one-hour boot-camp classes, all while Tone You Up's trainers preach the components of a healthful diet, such as eating plenty of protein and vegetables and not using cake frosting as toothpaste. Some staffers motivate the campers through cardio and strength training in the great outdoors, and others lead in-home personal-training sessions. Each one-on-one or one-on-two session begins with a thorough body assessment and fitness test. Based on results, trainer and client discuss goals and map a total lifestyle program to help shed pounds or boost athleticism. Tone You Up also offers programs for small groups, including onsite boot camps for workers at schools and offices.
A fourth-degree black belt and international competitor for the national Cuban tae kwon do team, Alain Alvarez is no stranger to hard work. After retiring from international competition in 1998, Alain decided to turn his talents to training others through fun, inventive, and effective boot-camp classes and personal-training sessions. Each class maintains a furious pace, as students sweat and bound through body-weight exercises, sprints, agility drills, and anvil juggling. Sessions also integrate fun group activities such as tug of war, potato-sack races, and tag-team butter churning. Alain preaches that exercise can improve not just physical but also mental performance, and conducts classes on the beach, in a parking lot, or on the grassy fields of a local park.
