The inaugural Roots by the Sea festival invites more than 20 of the island’s most popular reggae bands to converge upon Makapu’u Meadows in an all-ages jamboree honoring the birthday of rasta legend Bob Marley. Grassy meadows give way to gorgeous island views as eight hours of mellow Jamaican beats fill two stages. Headlining the rock-steady brigade, celebrated Oahu sextet The Green lets loose with the uplifting harmonies and dancehall hits that put it on Billboard’s Top 10 reggae chart. Among the score of other artists, in-demand Hawaiian party band Natural Vibrations, known to fans as Natty Vibes, produces positive energy with wind-powered dreadlocks, and Father Psalms lays down straightforward tributes to reggae greats and the spiritual life. The University of Hawaii cheerleaders inject the blissed-out atmosphere with the excitement of a dance-off, paying tribute to Bob Marley’s groundbreaking if subtle use of pom-poms in the recording studio.
Though Abe Lee has more than 35 years of real-estate experience and has developed more than 90 projects, it may be his master's degree in education that keeps students walking through his classroom door. He has helped thousands of professionals navigate the complex world of real estate through his classroom and online programs, where students can take practice tests while crafting model subdivisions out of Monopoly pieces. In both settings, he boils down issues such as property inspections, finance and tax protocols, and zoning regulations into straightforward language. He has also authored proprietary and Hawaii Real Estate Commission–approved continuing-education courses for current realtors and CPAs and pre-licensing classes for agents-to-be.
After working with dogs for a decade, Donna Heu founded Poi Dogs Day Care & Boarding. She and her knowledgable staffers mingle with pups throughout a 10,000-square-foot facility that gives dogs plenty of leg room. The team watches over pooches day and night, and grooms them with bath and nail trims. To ensure pets play well together, the center is broken up into separate areas so that tail waggers of similar sizes and energy levels can happily congregate. There's also an outdoor area where dogs can revel in the open space.
