Colossal train engines once pulled hefty freight along the O&W Railway's main line. Today, where the rails lines formerly cut through glistening tree canopies, a 2-mile unpaved trail splices through six rural hamlets, just 90 miles from New York City. It's along this rails-to-trails path that Woodridge Segway Tours whisks its adventurers through beautiful mountain views, clean country air, and the sounds of fresh water trickling. With safety helmets securely atop their heads, tour takers steer the two-wheeled segway transporters with intuitive gestures: leaning forward to go ahead, leaning backward to reverse, and pulling on their ears to make the segways sing.

Writing a letter or eating a rotisserie chicken aren’t things you should do while driving. During trips to JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, or a range of other locations with drivers from Five Star Limo Car Service Inc., though, patrons don’t have to keep their eyes on the road. As the gleaming vehicles slip through traffic, passengers relax to prepare for stressful business meetings or hammock-modeling gigs.

In 1990, Thomas Yozzo and Chris Moyer met at their fraternity at Bloomsburg University. They got along so well that they'd vacation together with their families over the ensuing years and even discussed opening a business together. They didn't necessarily know what type of business it would be, but they knew they'd be able to work well together, unlike raisins and any known dessert.

In 2009, Thomas suggested they open a distillery, and after years of research, the duo purchased a small farm and apple orchard in 2013. They renovated the farm's 150-year-old barn from the ground up and turned it into the distillery and tasting room. They also used the orchard's four acres of apples to create their apple-based vodka and applejack liquor. Thomas and Chris have created a bourbon as well, and plan on introducing the public to their whiskey and their gin?made with botanicals grown on their farm?as soon as they're ready.

Meandering along the quiet waters 150 miles north of New York City, Hudson Cruises' captains navigate the picturesque artery of the northern Hudson River Valley, offering views of the rolling Catskills and, occasionally, the belly buttons of soaring bald eagles. Both private and public tours—including chartered dinner cruises, Hudson-Athens lighthouse tours, sunset tours, and Latin Dance Party cruises—traverse the waterway, with accommodations for up to 150 passengers on the New Orleans–style paddleboat. Tours take place May–October, seven days a week.

Rolling meadows spread out amid rocky slopes, with the gray-blue peaks of the Catskills Mountains looming in the distance. In front of this scenic backdrop, Millbrook Winery invites guests to immerse themselves in the verdant, sprawling landscape of its 130-acre estate. On the more than 30 acres currently under the vine, its growers cultivate varietals such as chardonnay, tocai friulano, pinot noir, and cabernet franc, which are then mashed and fermented into the estate's characteristically dry wines. Having recently surpassed their 24th vintage, the winemakers display evidence of their grape-smashing prowess with a bounty of gold medals awarded by the Hudson Valley Wine and Grape Association, as well as the New York Wine & Food Classic.

When not hiking along a newly laid one-mile walking trail that meanders through the vineyards, guests gather in the winery building—a renovated Dutch-hip dairy barn bedecked with old white-framed windows, bare-wood walls, and exposed ceiling beams. Inside, tasting guides expound on the winery's various types of wine, revealing which grapes were used, how long they spent in the barrel, and their favorite New Yorker articles. In addition to tastings, they pass on their knowledge in a range of events, such as boot-camp training for prospective wine growers. They also grant guests personalization of their vintages with fully customizable wine labels, letting them outfit bottles with their own photos and names.
